So I get my most serious buyer yet for the Camaro and the check engine light comes on during the test drive. That's never happened before. I whip out my scanner and find out it's the rear O2 sensor picking up on catalytic converter inefficiency. I do some research on the internet and find out that GM has a rash of failures of the catalytic converter and there is a rework program. Thanks GM.... I probably lost the buyer now.
I'm going to call the dealer and see if they will change the cats for free because I probably still qualify. I'm going to weigh some other options like eliminating cats altogether. If I were keeping this car it would get long tube headers and dual exhaust. But I have to keep reminding myself to keep it inexpensive. |

| Can't the rear O2 on those cars be deleted with a resistor? |

| Yes, but the problem doesn't go away just because you ignore it. It serves a good purpose to let you know when the CAT is a problem. |

My point was that for the price of two resistors and some pipe, the cats could not be a problem.
However, if you can get new cats for free from Chebbie, all the better. |

Particularly if you are selling it. You can actually buy "emulators" but I think they are just resistors as Aaron stated. _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

| Being almost a 10 year old car you have to question if investing anymore money in it is a wise financial decision. |

| Maybe you don't realize this car literally is a financial investment to make me money. |

| Good news. The dealer took the car in this morning with good faith that they would replace cats for free if that's how they diagnosed the problem. Now we'll just have to wait and see how they diagnose the problem.... |

Exactly why you shouldn't dump a ton of money into it! _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

It's official, 2 new cats for free.
But that's not the end of the story. Turns out the technical service bulliten was good for 10 years or 120K miles, whichever is first. I look at the in service date of the car and 10 years is December 7.... as in this Tuesday. Am I lucky or what??? |

I'd call that a lucky break. _________________
