| if it is a TBI car, and a manual, it should be 3.08 from the factory. |

| Just curious. I've driven that car about 7 miles. lol. Before the engine swap it was a 305 TBI. 5 speed. |

Get a jack and count it out. Only way to know for sure what's in there without pulling it apart. Jon will tell you about how stuff gets changed out for stupid reasons. |

Yeah, you really could have anything in that axle. It's not necessarily stock.
Lift the back of the car and put the trans in neutral. If you have posi then both tires should rotate the same direction and of equal amount. If you have limited slip or open differential then one wheel spins in the opposite direction as the other and you will need to chalk one wheel so it won't spin (and to make the driveshaft spin). Rotate the tire 10 times and count the number of revolutions of the driveshaft.
Gear Ratio = (driveshaft rotations) / (wheel rotations)
You need to multiply by 2 if you chalked one wheel.
The more brainless you can make this the more accurate you will be. I put a piece of tape in the 6 o'clock position on the driveshaft and do the same on the wheel that I'm going to rotate. (remember, you can move tape to line things up again ) I also keep two columns of data on a piece of paper and place a hash mark in the appropriate column each time the driveshaft or wheel goes a full revolution. If you are uber accurate then you can just spin the wheel once. I'm not that good. Spinning the wheel 10 times improves accuracy. You're trying to measure a small fraction of a difference in gear ratios so being off by a little bit can make things questionable. I used this procedure on my Camaro and was accurate within 0.01. |

The only exception to that is if you're running a zexel torsen, they won't run the worm gear up enough by just rotating it in which case the only thing you can do to be TOTALLY sure is to open it up and have a look, check for posi and count the ring and pinion while you're in there driven divided by drive (ring gear divided by pinion) and you have your ratio
On a side note I've got a set of richmond gears with like 70 miles on them, 3.23 if you're interested, I pulled them outta my truck and swapped to a 4.10 and they were cleaned off and put back in their box if you're interested _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

No, the Torsen is no different than anything else. It is gear driven and behaves like an open diff when you rotate it.
I just went through this in a few weeks ago on my 2001 SS. |

Yeah that's what I meant, they're the most deceptive unit cuz you can tell by just spinning the tires in the air, we had that issue with my friends gta it had a torsen, I checked it by jackin up the axle and spinning it, looked like an open diff but I could swear up and down both tires were spinning when I burnt out, popped the cover and bam zexel torsen lol sneaky pricks _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

From what I remember, last time I checked I spun the right wheel, but the left didn't spin. hmm..
Does anyone have a posi unit? |

Something is going to spin, whether it's the other wheel or the driveshaft. The reason I suggest to chalk the other wheel is because if it does spin at all it slows down the driveshaft and ruins your calculations. |

I've been sitting on my torsen unit for a while I haven't gotten the axles fr it, just search ebay for them, don't get a gov-loc unless you feel like re doing it later I blew thru 3 of them before I gave up and put an open unit in there, I pickied up the torsen hoping to swap it but you need the proper series gears and a new set of axles becaus e the spline count is different _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

The Torsen has 28 spline input. 1990 and up axles have 28 spline axle shafts. You only need to swap axle shafts if you have an older car.
The Torsen comes with both 2-series and 3-series gears. Which do you need? I am sitting on a 2-series right now. If you're sitting on a 3-series that you can't use, then I might work a straight up trade for my 2-series and in the end we're both happy. |

Correct lol but if I had a 92 I would have had most of my body work done already lol and I would have lucked out on the axles honestly tho id still replace mine if I had the 28's but I'm ocd with doing new parts because in my experience if you want part A, you need parts B thru D to either compliment it or to even install it lol _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory
