Alright, so we're trying to figure out what color we want to paint the car. Any ideas?
We're thinking about a deep deep wineberry purple color. Black at night and that color when the sun hits it. |

That is one of those personal opinion type things!
I say if there is a color you are good with, roll on it!
I am looking at having mine done as well, however I will roll with the stock color for sure.
I have a friend with a 4th gen that is a dark color similar to what you had mentioned, and it's really nice!
Either way good luck and I hope it turns out well! _________________

One thing I know for sure is that you have very good style. That is EXACTLY what I was going to suggest. I have always liked that color. |

| Alright! Thanks. We've just got to do body work and sand it. We need a DA sander. All we have is an electric random orbit sander. this could take awhile... |

Electric random orbit sander works just fine.. the key is too start with a low grit, like 100 then work your way up. I learned that by removing all the paint with 220.(took months)
In my experiences, it is easier to only remove the amount of paint required. If the panel is perfect, scuff and paint.
I have quite a few autobody tools if you need help with anything. _________________ -Donald

Whoa!!! Not 100 grit!!! lol
Unless you need to strip the paint for some reason
If there is no issues with the paint you can sand it with 600 or 800 grit and a grey scothbrite to remove the shine, then paint it.
If you use anything coarser then 400grit you need to prime it first then sand that down, then paint it.
Always go with as fine a grit as you can!
PS, always use a random orbit sander for finish sanding not a single action. SA works great for stripping but is to harsh for finish work.
What type of bodywork do you need to do?
Dents, scratches, chips, etc? _________________ 1987 - Trans am GTA, hooker headers, Borla catback, Cat delete, CAI, 9.6 @ 75mph 1/8mile

haha, that's what I meant. I just meant that you shouldn't be afraid, I was, so I used like 220 to strip most of my first car when I could have done it alot faster. _________________ -Donald

Really? ya that would take a while. If you have a dent you need to fix or a rust spot you need to grind out, use 56 grit, get it done in a hurry, just dont leave it on the metal to long or youll see why
Nothing coarser then 56grit and new sheetmetal is to thin for anything else.
At least with 220 grit, you are ready to prime No need to go over everything again. _________________ 1987 - Trans am GTA, hooker headers, Borla catback, Cat delete, CAI, 9.6 @ 75mph 1/8mile

| Body work, there's a few dents we need to fix, but we have different parts we can use that don't have dents. But we're taking off the factory teal and putting on a wineberry kind of color. But I heard that if you need to take out dents, sand to metal, if not, just sand to primer and leave it. Is that true? |

| Don't even sand to primer. Just sand til you have a good smooth even base. That is as long as the paint is well stuck. |

Don't I want to have something for the new paint to stick to? or do I primer over factory paint? |

| You can prime or seal over the factory paint depending on how much work you need to do. Most likely you'll be priming and blocking. |

| We have parts that dont have any dents that we're going to install. I poof canned my engine compartment (scuffed with scotchbrite first) and I spilled some gas in a spot and the black came off. So I don't want that to happen to the outside. Not that I'm planning on spilling any gas on it, but I want the paint to look nice and last as long as possible. No half ass jobs. hahah |

| Gas eating the paint is more about the quality of paint you used and the amount of time its cured. |
