ls1tech should have all the info you need.
Junkyards are likely to have more trucks, suvs etc with 5.3s and 6.0s than fbodies/vettes etc with ls1/ls2/6/7 etc _________________ 91 Z28 |

Those 5.3's have a really big problem with oil consumption. 2 Qt's per 3,000 miles is deemed acceptable by GM. They're doing a oil consumption study right now to try and figure out a remedy to it. _________________ Richmond 3.73 posi| 36/24 sway bars | SLP LM2 | Koni's | Ground Control 800/200 | Y2K wheels | Dyno Don headers & Y-pipe | airfoil | BBK underdrive pulleys | Raised strut mounts | Extended ball joints | LCARB'S

Hmm never heard about any consumption issues. All the ones I've changed oil in had been perfect full at 3k and higher with synth. Owners never mentioned anything. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

LS7 is crazy expensive. You could do more and have less invested if you built up a basic LS1 or LS2.
I assume you want aluminum for weight reduction and handling for turns. If you just want a drag car then look closer at an 6.0L iron truck block. You can drop the Caddy 6.2L heads on it and basically have a LS6 engine on the cheap, but with a stronger foundation that can be built for more power. You could make a 427 stroker out of the truck block and start making serious power. |

| I saw a couple of complete LS1 setups for sale at the swap meet today ranging from $2,500-3,500. 20K-80k miles on them. |

GM thinks it may have something to do with the pistons/rings. Once they figure out the issue there may be a recall. While we're on the note of recalls, there may be one soon for LS3 equipped 5th gens, every single one we've had in for service at the dealership has had oil leaks at the oil pan gasket. _________________ Richmond 3.73 posi| 36/24 sway bars | SLP LM2 | Koni's | Ground Control 800/200 | Y2K wheels | Dyno Don headers & Y-pipe | airfoil | BBK underdrive pulleys | Raised strut mounts | Extended ball joints | LCARB'S

That's really only a problem near redline. Steve mentioned that at Dyno that it's fairly normal and most people do the LS6 valley cover which has the pcv integrated in addition to the catch can.
I've done just about 9k on my 5.3 swap and I'm about a quart low just about to do another oil change. It's the same consumption my 305 had (a quart an oil change) but it's not from leaking, it sucks it through the intake at high rpms. |

He's got a 350 for it we had dyno'd after building that puts 650 down at the crank, natrually aspirated. It does have a custom ground cam in it though. I'm headed out to the shop on Sunday, I'll see if I can get specs on that cam, etc, in case anyone is intersted. I'm pretty sure the cam was from Crane. Not 100% on that though. What's funny about that engine, and van, is it's a work van, not even to haul his cars around. He plans to drive it daily for work, should be interesting. This guy had an Isuzu diesel box van he decided was too slow and propane injected, blew it up the first time he hit the switch. That thing was not a very fun rebuild.... |
650 hp at what, 9000 rpm.
Gonna be quite the box truck |

Don't want a drag car, not really into drag racing. I'm more of a road race person. So aluminum is ideal. What swap meet were those LS1's at? _________________ 1986 Camaro Z-28 IROC-Z 350 swap |

The Portland swap meet, it's at PIR/Expo Center. It's $7 to get in, and ends tomorrow evening.
There were a few inside the buildings themselves and at least one out front. They all were fully assembled and with wiring harness. I know one was from a 99 Trans Am and another from a 2002 SS. One of them came with a 4L60E aswell. _________________ 2010 Cobalt LT

Unless you change the front timing cover gasket and oilpan gasket, yeah. It'll leak a qt every oil change. _________________
