Time for me to tear up the asphalt again! (not really, it's a 2.8 )

I just finished putting all suspension back together today. One scary moment when the jack slid off a board it was on and the car fell off it's supports! Duh Luckily, nothing broke!

I took it out for a little spin, wow, my fuel pump must have been in a failing state looong before it finally died for good. Pulls nicely in the top end!

Time to celebrate with some SAKE!! (real sake from Japan, not imported, bought IN Japan Very Happy )

Oh, and I won't be doing an access panel in the Firebird. Dropping the tank is just too easy.

I hope you reconsider cutting an access door. These are uni-body cars and no matter how you do it you will weaken the body structure. Since your doing one now, the second one will go much faster.

But if you do go ahead, make sure you don't have square corners. Radius them so you won't have a place for cracks to start.

ya, just don't do it, it really isn't a hard enough job to justify cutting up the car that bad (fire suit on)

I've never been a fan of the access door. I wouldn't do it on my own car. I have dropped the tank on my car 4-5 times now, it isn't so bad, just pull the tank,

IF I was to do an access panel, it'd be pulling the tank... pulling the carpet and welding in a reinforced sealed door.

I've had mine out twice, and never doored it.

No Hack jobs.

A few small screws in a plate will not have the same strength as the original sheet metal has. As Paul said if you welded a flange in and sealed it, then maybe. But the amount of work that takes is way more than just pulling the tank and replacing the pump.

It's your car, do as you see fit. All of us here have recommended against it. It's just not that big of a deal to pull the tank.

still have to figure a proper way to deal with the high pressure fuel lines, since they are long and wind down the tank in a way that won't let you pull the pick up out of your access door Very Happy

I worry about exhaust gas or tire smoke leaking through.

Or how about a bad fire when you get in a car accident? It is the gas tank right there.
