305's got timing chains too. Laughing

So no timing chain slop, but loses timing when the engine stops.

Any vertical slop in the distributor? Cam gear not engaging? Have you tested with another distributor to see if that's the problem?

Only way it's going to change timing is if the clamp is loose or not seated on the dizzy allowing it to spin.

Timing chain, even with slop, will hold time to a point, it just makes the cam lazy

I was going to say the outer ring of the dampener may have slipped, but as paul pointed out with the timing chain, it should still start and run, even if it barely runs.

are you sure its timing, and not over/under fueling? what kind of shape are your spark plugs in?

I assume you're checking the timing with a light each time? Or what....

yup checked timing with a light even had another guy check it with his and he said it was dead on, spark plugs are brand new. when it wants to it runs fine just after it hits normal operating temp and under load it sounds like a tin can in the engine. when i get bored again i'll try to snip a vid of it or somthing

So the timing doesn't actually change?

Maybe we should start from the begining here.

Have you put a light on it through the rpm range when it's warmed up to verify that it is correct, and pulling a good curve?
