Alphius' Megasquirt thread inspired me to dig through my box of unfinished stupid projects I have going. I found my LED cube and decided to get back to work on it.

It runs on an ATMega 32 microcontroller. The only part I have completed is the multiplexing array and address selector. I bought a 5v power supply for it and made a wire for it out of a $2 extension cord from Wal-Mart.

It doesn't look too bad from the top. The bottom, though, shows how tedious wiring this thing together was. I only have 2 layers of LEDs assembled. I made a template out of wood that I drilled holes in. I just put the LEDs in upside down and then solder the layer together. Each layer is driven by a pair of transistors controlled directly by the microcontroller.

No, this is going to be a cube of 512 LEDs. I found the idea and instructions here:

I do want to make some tail lights though. I have a set of Trans Am tail lights that I'm going to try and make into array-type LED tail lights. I need to figure out the details though and experiment small scale with some superflux LEDs and a PWM controller. I'm going to try to make them completely enclosed and use busted light bulbs to make connectors so it will just plug-in.

Instead of using the bases from broken bulbs, why not get something made for the purpose? Check out the brake/tail light page at Super Bright LEDs, they have some empty bases for about 50 cents each. The one you need is BAY15D to fit an 1157 socket.

Yeah it looks pretty awesome. I might get one to fool around with. Seems versatile and easy to use once set up. It'll be interesting to see how this works when he's done with it. It can use wideband o2 can't it?

Yes, the MegaSquirt can use a wideband AFR. It actually has a target AFR table and can use closed-loop logic to keep your AFR where it needs to be all the time. You don't even need a narrowband with a MS, and frankly, who would want to tune with a NB anyway? Laughing

If you have any more MS questions I'd be happy to answer them in my thread. Glad to see I'm inspiring people to dust off their old projects!

It's been sitting so long I'm missing a few lil' pieces. Have the controller board partly together. My kitten is determined today to try and eat all the little pieces. I'm pretty tired anyways maybe tomorrow more will get done.

Pfft, Buick has nothing on a rotary as far as ignition goes. It's still a 6cyl engine. Not a fire one plug, then another one a little bit later in the same hole!

Got the layout of the controller mostly done. Also got some of the simple solder traces done. At least this won't be as tedious as the latch array was. While I had the soldering iron out I took the speedo buffer out from the car to repair the connections to it. Seems to have gotten rid of the random 100mph jumps in indication.
