My headlights only pop up intermittently. the switch is cool, i checked it out. the motors sound fine, and pop right up when they work, and will work ten times in a row, then fail on the eleventh. What else coudl it be? i currently have a parts car, but don't even know what to grab off of it. any help is apriciated guys.

It probably is the nylon bushings in the motors, mine did the same progressively getting worse until I had to manually open them EVERY time. Got the Top down solutions $25 rebuild kit for the motors and they've worked perfect ever since.

I'm with stupid

Happened to mine finally late last year Tony. I just got the bushings from TDS, not the entire rebuild kit. There are like 3 nylon 'pucks' on each side. IIRC, one pack of 3 is $7 or something like that. I actually tried making my own but the material I used wasn't hard enough so I just paid Lon.

You can verify if this is it by taking the housing apart. I would bet that your former 'pucks' are a fine white powder instead of solid discs. Simple fix... get em coming.

86 popups don't work that way, the same way as later units. these have no bushing based clutch. the motor turns, they turn.

my motors do not even try to turn. this is why i don't think it's the clutches.

Does the '86 use the headlight control module mounted on the firewall?

I got the same problem on my '86. The left side works perfectly but the right side pops only about 10% of the time. I barely have to nudge it to make it go up however which makes me believe the motor is still good. Confused
