So I was reading through the chiltons manual and it said the coil springs must be removed before the torque arm. If the torque arm is removed first, vehicle damage will result.

What type of damage is it talkin about?

Rear end can rotate without the torque arm attached, which can damage the shocks, panhard bar, u-joint, or possibly shoot springs out at a high rate of speed.

That's the first stuff that comes to mind.

The more important question is why you want to remove the torque arm in the first place? Don't tell me you decided to jack under that and bent it too!

In that case, Gabe is correct. Without the torque arm the axle is not rotationally secured.

Now I don't think there is, but is there a way to put the torque arm on wrong?

It only goes on one way but the holes are big enough that there is some slop at the mount. I always leave my torque arm bolts loose on the axle until it's all put together.

I feel it's necessary to mention, there are two types of torque arms that require different torque arm mounts.

I knew there were two different torque arm mounts but I did not know there were two different torque arms. Care to expand on this?

The "W" is either towards the driver or passenger side. I can't remember the years associated with it. Also they made a torque arm that was solid and one with holes punched out of it. My 89 stuff was all solid. Dang I wish I could remember.

82 and 83 were different. IIRC it was due to the shorter transmissions. The 'W' on the bushing end goes the other way on the oddball ones.
