|
|
| I just bought a 91 Firebird to take out the T-5 and replace the A700-R4 in my 84 Camaro. Once I have the T-5 pulled, does anyone have advice on physical inspections I should do on it before I re-install it? I just ordered a new Zoom MF clutch kit, but everything else will be a direct swap (I hope). |

going from auto to manual is never a direct fit. Just putting that out there its a lot of cutting and fitting, the only real inspection you can do without popping it open is gonna be spinning the input shaft as you go thru the gears, put it in neutral, spin the input, output should stay still, 1st, 2nd etc will spin thats about all you can do for it, you could open the drain pulg and check for metal shavings if you really wanted to _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

Coulda fooled me. I only ever had to cut two holes. Maybe I was doing it wrong.
@ rockstar: Welcome to the crew, dude.
First off, the transmission you bought is set up for an electronic speedometer. Your '84 came with a cable-driven speedo, so that will have to be dealt with.
Do make sure to dump and check the fluid as was mentioned above. Metal is bad. Burnt is bad. |

Cutting things generally means it doesn't fit and you need to do some modification lol that's all I meant, other than that its easy _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

That trans fits fine. It's really only if you want to use the shifter and clutch pedal that you have to cut some stuff. _________________

Indeed. If it's just for lookin' pretty, you can drop a T5 in place of a 700 without changing anything. |

Or cut the two holes nicely just like the factory did. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

Make sure the input spins freely and doesn't wobble.
Same with the output. Check the splines on the input and the very tip where it rides on the pilot bushing in the back of the crankshaft. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

Thanks for all the advice (well maybe not all of it!). After the 3rd or 4th post I sort of figured you guys like to have fun with this stuff
Any ideas on how to convert an electric speedo sender to manual output? Or should I just replace the speedo with a later model or aftermarket? Anybody with a source for a later model instrument cluster? I really don't want to spend a lot of $$ |

You have to get an expensive conversion box. It's kind big because it has a motor to drive the cable. Have to hook it to power ground etc.
To convert the trans itself, you'd need a WC mainshaft for cable speedo, and a cable speedometer tailshaft. And a press, good snap ring pliars, etc to completely disassemble the transmission.
Or you do what I did and put Autometer gauges in LOL. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

Took the cable drive 700 out of my car, dropped in an electric T-56 with Autometer gauges. Problems solved. |
