Not a very discriptive explaination. But, if the battery is low, it will do some funky and sound like that (maybe, your quick tapping, and mine might be different).

I was thinking the same thing about the battery being low.

Did it start after the new starter / solinoid install? Might be a really bad alignment but more than likely it is a chipped tooth on the flywheel? Put a socket/ breaker bar on the crank pulley snout and turning it a couple of degrees, remove the socket / breaker bar and try starting it.

If it starts without the noise, replace the wring gear. If not, replace the starter with one that hasnt been rebuilt 10 times by south Americans.

Trust me, life time warranties on hard use parts are useless. Purchase original parts manufactured to original specifications. This will make sense when you are laying on your back on a Sunday night trying to get your dailey driver running so you can get to work Monday.

Buy it, shim it properly, and never look back.

If it was in need of shims from the time you installed it, it probably would have sounded like a bag of cats.

My two cents is on a low (but not dead) battery.

If it's still the cracked one, just pull it. As Dave mentioned, don't just buy the Blatozone crap, buy a good one, or a junkyard one.

The solenoid will chatter if voltage at the solenoid is not sufficient to hold the pinion extended during crank. It is often due to weak batteries.

Battery voltage decreases as current draw increases.

1. The solenoid current draw is not very high and it can pull in just fine.
2. When the starter motor begins to crank the current draw goes way up and battery voltage drops. The voltage is too low to keep the solenoid engaged and it drops out.
3. The starter stops cranking and the battery voltage recovers. The solenoid is still being given a crank command so it goes right back in and the process repeats itself over again from the beginning.

Solenoid chatter will destroy the contacts in the solenoid in a hurry because DC current arcs when you make and break contact. You end up getting metal transfer and melting of contacts. If you end up having intermittent starting problems later on then you can attribute it back to this event.
