So I get an e-mail last night from Ford Powertrain Applications:

Bare, no coating, $550 + $55 shipping. Hi Heat cerma coated, inside and out, baked and polished for $775 + shipping. All hardware included . We are currently 10 days back logged but the order desk will be closed from Sept 24 to Oct 9 but production will continue and all ordered placed before 9/23 will be processed and shipped.

Stan F.P.A Ford headers
253 848-9503 Pacific time 9-6 Mon-Fri

So their prices have gone up, and they weren't cheap to begin with. The only problem is that there are only three companies that make headers for the early fullsize Fords: Crites, FPA, and Sanderson <- (cheap short-tube junk).

These are the Crites:

Never mind the wrong date, the ones for older cars are similar. Those gargantuan things have 2 inch primaries, and 3 1/2 inch collectors! Also, the front four cylinder primaries drop down in front of the crossmember. The good news is that they cost a mere $329 + shipping.

Now I shift at 6 grand on an engine with a true displacement of 395ci, but jesus christ I doubt I'll ever need two inch primaries. Not to mention that this car originally had a set of those on it when it was first built, but the previous owner nailed them on a pothole, and had to revert back to T-Bird logs. <- (logs + big block = teh suk)

Anyway, this post turned into kind of a rant, but that's whats going on in Ford-land. I'll probably pick up the Crites, and go in a little bit different direction with this motor. When I put it together I was worried about losing low end power in such a heavy car, so I kept everything small (low dual-plane, small Holley, stock converter). In hindsight that was kind of a mistake. The FE makes stupid power through the band, but right now it's strangled above 4K, mostly due to the exhaust. Plus the converter stalling at 1900 sucks.

1500-6000 powerband, here I come. Very Happy

Been doing some math... Crites uses .090 tubing for their headers ( Shocked ) giving me a primary ID of 1.82". That calculates to roughly a peak torque of 4650rpm with my engine, assuming interwebs header calculators are right.

That doesn't sound bad. My custom tri-Y headers for the firebird were almost $800 10 years ago. They were made by Lemon's one off for me and are a work of art. Of course, they messed up and used the wrong tranny for the mockup so I got them for half price because they didn't want to redo the job. That's why I have a TH400 now instead of the Tremec.

If you pay too little for a header then it won't last and will leak exhaust.

Try Stans Headers in Auburn. For 750+ you may be able have a set of stainless steel headers made.

$750 is what I paid for my Stainless Works headers. Crying or Very sad However, it is probably the only part I have ever installed that went in without a hitch. No pounding, no cutting, nothing. I was scared.

Crites probably uses that thick because they know they'll get pounded being infront of the crossmember!
