1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z

So I started following the skim coated sections with the DA, and well... they made like the Grand Canyon and got deep fast. I ain't gonna lie guys, it's real real bad:

Hard to see all the morbid detail in those dirty pics, but both the front fender and rear quarter were totally caved at some point. The rear bumper was replaced at some point, it has less paint than the rest of the car.

I was standing there thinking that by the time I replaced that front fender, rewelded the passenger rocker panel, replaced the floors, and then had to figure out what the eff to do about that rear quarter, this chassis really isn't worth it. Plus if I yank all the goodies and crush it I won't have to worry about moving it for the fourth time.

So glad I did this before doing anything to the chassis other than underhood paint. Laughing

Something a bit quicker then a da when you have thick stuff to get off like bondo.. Use a straight rotary polisher with a 36grit sanding pad.. It will really make the bondo fly. It works on paint too, but you have to be careful or you can put too much heat in the panel. Also some paints will just melt and make a mess instead of sanding.

I was using a Norton Rapid Strip disc on my angle grinder to knock out the bondo. It was sparking a bit on the raw metal though, so when I got most of it cleaned off I switched to the DA with 60 grit on it. Problem is the DA doesn't like all the dips from their hammering, thus the splotchiness in the pics.

@ Ian: Yeah I know. There's also two other t-top cars under 1K on CL right now. I'll wait till after I've moved and settled into a new shop before I buy anything.

@ jensen: This stuff is actually tan. The pink is from the red sanding dust.

You mean whatever color Henry Ford wants?

I believe you may have found out why the gas cap doesn't line up... Laughing

It looked pretty straight before you started sanding. Somebody did some decent looking bodywork. (but not good bodywork because they filled that sucker up good with Bondo!)

You know you want a hardtop. Wink

Yes!

I was impressed with their ability to pull and blend such a cave-in. Their bondo was not that thick, actually. Still, that panel should have been cut, or the car should have been junked.

I do not want a hardtop, Sam-I-Am.

I am probably moving again. It's not the middle-of-the-night-crazy-girlfriend type of moving that I've done in the past, though, just more like sick of stupid BS time to head on down the road type of moving. Laughing

It would be cool if you moved a little closer to civilization! And by that I mean Tacoma. Laughing
