I can drive around for 15 miles or so no problem but when the car has to sit in traffic it begins to stall and eventually quits. I have to let it park for a bit then it will be drivable again. It seems kinda rich. I did put a new fuel pump in last yr but I didnt update the fuel regulator. Its a hi flow pump. I can get pressure readings soon to see whats at the rail. It only has 67k on it. Any ideas? Injectors? The MAF sensor? _________________

I did the ICM today along with a new cap and rotor.
At first it ran better than before but when brought up to temp it began the rough idle and then the death mode. This time I stayed close to home so no big deal, let it cool and limp home.
I was looking at the paper that came with the ICM and it indicated that a bad coil could cause the ICM to go bad by fail due to gimped plugs and wires. I will keep that in the back of my mind.
Not sure how long the ICM will hold up due to these bad conditions, who knows that could be the problem and I just dusted a new part.
It tossed a code 44 at me too, so looks like an O2 sensor.
DTC - 44 Oxygen sensor error (lean condition indicated)
DTC - 44 Left bank O2 sensor error (lean condition indicated)
The only thing I know fore sure is it is temp related, it will run like a bat out of hell until it heats up. |

when the car is cold the engione is in "open" loop mode and the computer uses info on chip to run engine, after ~150 degrees engine goes into "closed" loop mode and now the computer uses all the sensor inputs to control fuel etc. so if u have say a bad o2 , u wont notice it untill u warm up to closed loop mode. sound like a new o2 is in order.
i hope u can understand my idea here.

Are you set up to datalog? If so you can watch the O2 output. In my experience Chevy O2's rarely throw codes. They just crap up.
Cheap as hell to replace, though. Don't buy the Bosch ones everybody sells or you'll be replacing it again withing a thousand miles. Get the NGK/NTK or Delco or something.
Could also be a coil overheating. Have to check for spark when it is actively crapping up. |

Mike seems to have a good line of thinking here. Does it progressively get worse as it warms up or is it like a light switch that just pops over and you're running like a dog? _________________

Its a fast ramp up to stall, not like a switch though. What O2 sensor would be the 44 code? Would a dealer have a better way to read the code so I dont keep throwing parts at it? I guess a new coil wouldnt hurt and I have not changed the plugs since I had it |

An '85 Trans Am only has one oxygen sensor, so that one would probably be the one throwing a code.
Dealers = morons. And they'll want eighty bucks for to tell you the exact same thing you can find out with a paper clip.
Plugs are cheap and easy. You can also inspect the wires while you're at it. Have you ever checked for spark while it was crapping out? |

Ty.
Its beed 6 months in the garage so I replaced the O2 Sensor today. Code went away so it seems a plug change is next to fine tune it.
Im looking at a 03 50th Anniversay Vette Vert now, so it may be time to sell the bird _________________

I can't imagine that bird in anyone else's hands... Or more importantly I can't imagine anyone else appreciating it as much as you. _________________

Your call Don. I am sure you will have fun either way.
I will say that within the last year my dad got rid of his bitchin' '55 bel air and got a C5 vert. The corvette is a nice car but he is finally admitting he made a mistake and misses the old Chevy.

New hi energy coil, Bosch platniums and 8 mm wires. What a pain! Took both my wife and I to get this done. Ran like a champ then died, it seems its been the fuel pressure regulator all this time, so I just put in a Hypertech adjustable and dialed it up to 48 lbs. Looks like were back in business, thanks guys. _________________
