You thought I was joking about that, but no. Cool

So last week this happened:

What's all this then? (First person to tell me gets a cookie Razz)

Of course this motor has it's share of problems:

This was last weekend. There was literally no horizontal surface in the shop (including the floor) not occupied with crap.

It was about then that I decided I needed to clean out my shop (which is what led to me finding that brilliant call the police sign Razz). Still need to clear off the bench though.

Anyway, now that we have some room:

Looks familiar:

More tomorrow...

That's a real excellent question, John. I often find myself wondering that same thing.

That's either way too much toilet paper to have in a garage, or it's just the right amount of paper towels. Hard to tell from the photo.

I like the Mercury. Stylin'! Cool

Hate pulling ford engines. So cramped and weird bracket and mounting ways.

And then they stuck the cut off bits onto the intake manifold! Wink

Costco paper towel pack FTMFW! I prefer them over the blue "shop" towels just because at that price I can use a ton and throw them away and not feel bad about it.

Ford engine bays second only to newer BMW's for needless cramped-ness. Laughing

Even with how wide this car is you still cannot get some of the exhaust manifold bots out with a ratchet because you will back yourself right into the upper a-arm mount. Rolling Eyes

Speaking of wrenching in tight spaces, I did something really stupid recently. Take that as you may.

I removed a bolt from one of my turbos and it was in a very tight spot so I used a ratchet closed end wrench to save time. Well, I backed the bolt out a little too far before pulling out the wrench. Now I had the wrench stuck and the bolt was still inside the wrench so I couldn't tighten it back up again. Rolling Eyes One swift strike with a chisel and it was free, but I felt stupid anyway.

At least I didn't draw blood. Seems I can't work on a car without drawing blood. Got off lucky that day.

66 Merc 410, FE motor. One of two years they were produced.

It's the same motor as a 390 basically (same stroke) with the crank of a 428. Meaning it's also externally balanced (like a 428).

That's more about a Ford motor than I ever wanted to know. Razz

A winner. Wink

Well sort of.

A 410 is the same bore as 390 (same block), different stroke. It was indeed a 428 crank, and is indeed externally balanced. It used the same rods as the 390, but used a piston with a higher wrist pin to drop it in the bore while maintaining swept volume.

Compression was 10.5:1. All were factory 4V with the better (and ironically slightly smaller) heads.

A fun factoid: Ford had a bunch of said pistons with higher pins left over after they gave up on the 428s and just put 390s in everything. In 1968 when the government was cracking down on them they used those pistons in truck 390s to drop compression down to 7.9:1. Rolling Eyes

Holy low compression Batman! Laughing I like that fun fact. I wonder how one of those low-comp 390s would take to a couple honkin' turbos?

Were the heads on the 390 in that car the 2V version?

I'll be expecting my cookie next time I see you... Tappy tap tap

I had one of those low compression motors. This is kind of a lousy pic but take a look at the piston ring mark in the foreground cylinder:

The heads on the 390 we pulled out were C1AE-H; 1961 2V fullsize car 390.

I'll trade you the cookie for the MS. Razz

That piston is redonkulous.

MS is currently pending. Is the motor ready for it yet? I am betting I have lots of time until it becomes the slightest issue. Razz Working 16-18 hour days kinda puts a damper on the "building hobby electronics" thing. Our audit is over so in the next few weeks it should begin taking shape.

I like my cookies home-baked, warm, and slightly chewy. You have some time to practice. Laughing

Hell no!!! Laughing so hard it hurts

My new job is out in Raymond, and I've been staying out there during the week which means I have only a couple days to do everything.

BTW, those old heads are C1AE-6090-A not C1AE-H. This combination of brake cleaner, engine block paint and Dead Guy that I have going is not panning out so well for me. Rolling Eyes
