Insurance companies are doing it too. Combining the trim levels as it really makes no difference to the dollar figure anymore. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

When I insured mine 4 years ago, they said it was 7more bucks a month if it was a z.
But I agree, thats missleading as it should be correct on the trim level. _________________ 2008 GMC Z71

The reason that they do that is because there is no differentiation between the RS and Z28 models by VIN. CarFAX and others like it go solely off of the VIN#, so they just put both.
IIRC the Berlinetta got a different VIN, so that shows up.
It's very common for multiple items that are not specified in the VIN to both show up. The title for my truck says "F250 / F250 HD". It's an HD truck, but the VIN doesn't specify.
Insurance companies who are offering comprehensive on a vehicle care if it's a Z, because it costs more to fix it. But they can't tell that by the VIN, they have to have an agent inspect the car. |

Just did some quick searching.
Appears 81-87 did specifiy difference between sc/z28/berly.
88+ did not, that position changed to if it was basic coupe or vert. |

'82 thru '86: Fifth digit = carline series:
P = Sport Coupe or Z28
S = Berlinetta
'87 thru '92: Fifth digit = carline series:
P = Camaro (all models)
'87 thru '92: Sixth digit = body style:
2 = 2 door coupe (hatchback)
3 = 2 door convertible
All non-Berlinetta Camaro's have 'P' as the fifth letter in the VIN.
At no time from 1967 through 2002 did Chevy ever specify Z28's in the VIN. The reason was that it was essentially an RPO code. It was an option you ordered for your Sport Coupe.
The Trans Am was considered a separate model from the Firebird by Pontiac. No idea why, but they always have done it that way. |
