The bellhousings are different, obviously. I think the gear ratios are different as well, but not sure. Confused

Go drive John's '89 with the crap-ass V6 launch gear and then drive Al's '89 with a V8 T5. Then tell me how much the "same" they are. Wink

My '92 V6 T5 doesn't launch nearly as well as the '89 V8 T5. It never did, even when the '89 had the stock 3.08 rear gear.

Some of the Camaro V6 T5's have the S10's very very low launch gear: 4.03:1, which is practically a granny. This was done to mask the lack of power from the veesix in something which may have been vaguely considered a "truck." Razz

In later years (and carrying on into the 4th-gen T5's) the first gear ratio for the veesix was increased to 3.75.

For reference, your average V8 T5 has a 2.95:1 first, and the T56 has a 2.66 first gear. Wink

Jebus.

Are we talking about fords, s-10's? or f-bodies? Rolling Eyes

F-Body:
V6 and V8 f-body trans are different.

Inputs are different.
Gears are different.
Cases are the same.
Main shafts are the same provided same style (Speedo Type/Placement, WC/NWC)

Regarding WC and NWC, the above still applies. Up to '88 was NON-WORLD-CLASS (NWC)
'88+ was WORLD CLASS (WC)
World class used tapered bearings on the counter shaft, and multipiece synchros on 1st and 2nd gear as well as a few other minute changes.

S-10 vs f-body:
S-10 inputs can be different.
Gears are different again.
Tailshafts are different.
Mainshafts are different to match tailshaft.
Shift Rail and Top cover are different.
Main case is the same.

Mustang:
Damn near everything is different.
Case/Gears/Input/Tail/Mainshaft/ETC.

4th Gen T5:
Just like the mustang, damn near everything is different yet.
And will NOT bolt up to a thirdgen/s-10 style bellhousing

Bellhousings:
All f-body T5 bellhousings will bolt up an f-body thirdgen or s-10 transmission. The engine side is either 90ºV8/4.3LV6 or 60º2.8L style

Gear Ratios:
Don't get me started.
There are tons of different ratios.
I know there are two common OD ratio's for F-body V8 cars. The LG4 got a numerically lower (aka lower RPM for the same speed) OD than the LB9 cars got. There used to be a code chart on TGO but I'm having trouble finding.

Any questions?

I've heard that the 4th gen bellhousing pattern for the trans is the same as the mustang's. Do you know if thats true?

http://www.thirdgen.org/calculations
(gotta hit page down a couple of times to get to the chart)

The only reason I mention S10's is that many of the EFI 2.8L cars got the same ratios as the older duke/2.8L S10's with that low first gear, and are thus totally undesirable.

Somewhat of a convoluted post, but the gist of it is that he is running a 4th-gen V6 T5 behind an LSx motor using an LSx-to-Ford Toploader scattershield. Done to lower weight and skirt the price rules for his class.
Pretty cool stuff actually. Thumbs up

I've physically had one 4th gen t5 in hand, and it was different than the mustang. I don't know for SURE if that's a consistant trend. As the 4th gen T5's are for the V6 cars.

Could very well be Paul. I had just heard that the transmission pattern where it bolts to the bellhousing is the same as the mustang. Length, output shaft, speedo etc could be different. But opens up some weird swaps.
