Took Beefy (the camaro) down to the truck scale. The camaro weighed in at 3500lbs overall, 2150 front, 1350 rear

3335 without me

2067lbs front, 1267lbs rear without me.

62/38 distribution

Not too terrible. Interesting to note that the camaro with the V6 DID weigh

2950 without me

1525 front 1425

52/48 distribution

Just because the BBC is longer in the front, it hangs over the front wheels pulling weight off the rear and adding way more to the front. So it added 385lbs overall, took 160lbs off the rear and put it on the front. I did add a little more weight in wheels though but that's the only change since the V6. I think I'll start looking into moving the motor rearward a few inches. Anyone done this before? I think I'll have to cut the firewall up to do this... _________________ E30

That's probably about where your red car is, John, what with the glass hood, and general guttedness, and all. About the only thing you could do is put the battery in the trunk.

Travis, that's still light as hell for a BB car. Are you thinking you could get away with cutting the top out of the tunnel, and moving the mounts back? |

That chassis with the fully running V6 weighed 2950.

That chassis AFTER the BBC swap weighs 3335.

So that's probably 350lbs extra in motor and 35lbs for the tranny and driveline. It's really not that gutted though. No rear seats, all the sound deadening removed, 4th gen cloth seats, AC-delete, and a lot of the non-essentials removed. It does have a huge hole in the hood though....

I'm thinking of cutting out the front subframe to make room to move the tranny back, then cutting the firewall where-ever it hits.

Aaron, thank's for reminding me I can move the battery back! I have a tray back there, just need to use some cable. I have some 4/0 but I think that's a little overkill. |

Lol @ Ian. Aren't 'verts heavier than hard tops? I know you've got a lot of extra metal on that chassis.

Don't know what to tell you on the weight. Just what the scale said. Wonder what makes it lighter than you think? My tank was empty but even with 10 gallons of fuel that only puts me at 3400 ish.

Did chevy use different gauge metal through the years? That would explain it. |

Really? It was a long time ago, but IIRC my car bone stock weighed 3750 with a full tank and my then 180lb ass in the drivers seat. Man, I miss those days, 20 years / 100lbs later.....sucks to get old. |

There's extra metal "bracing" along with the top mechanism but there is also no huge glass hatch to contend with. |

Also no glass in the roof. Hardtop cars save a lot of weight. |

4098 isn't the weight. That's probably gross or something like that. Basically a "maximum weight".

I think there's alot of variation in truck scales. I know everytime I get weighed on our dump scales my truck weighs something different. These scales are made to weigh many thousands of pounds vs just a few for our cars. The error margins may be pretty wide.

I know we have a couple truckers like Rod and Flea.. do either of you know what kind of error margin they're allowed to have?

Maybe we should see about getting some race scales for a day some gathering. |

You're probably right, I dunno I haven't really looked at it since I bought it a few years ago, it'd be nice to have an accurate number tho lol I just had the number burned into myn head cuz I've always been told t tops were considerably heavier due to the glass and bracing _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

I've weighed mine on the scale off I5 in federal way a handful of times and always come up with 34XX depending on how full the tank is. I would presume they'd have to be pretty accurate since they're official scales. IE; you get tickets/state fines/infractions if they measure you over? But then again Washington has never been that great with laws... _________________

				| Our dump scale has varied by as much as 400lbs on my truck. Doesnt really matter on it because you're actually looking for tare weight not the actual weight of the vehicle. I would think where you park on the scale platform could have an effect on it as well. |

How would you get a tare weight without either having weighed pre-cargo or having the empty weight on file? Either way if the scale is off it'd show wrong, right?

You weigh before hand and then after emptying the load. So if the scale reads 500#s high or low doesnt matter.. cause both readings will be off the same amount. .. That's a small scale though. Not like the huge truck scales.

Reading up on the truck scales and havent found error margins yet. I did read that some scales measure a bending bar to figure the weight. I can see with that kind of system a light weight vehicle will cause almost no bending and your error margins will be higher then a heavy vehicle. |
