The car used to be 3.1 v6 berlinetta TPI, swapped that for a 305 carbed. Had so many extra stuff that I just crapped the whole harness and bought a new one from Painless wiring. Took out the ECM and all that noise. I've soldered most of the front engine section but have some minor questions on those some with tail section. My issue is the steering column and gauges...So lost on those. The car is in Silverdale, WA and as the title says I am willing to pay for help if necessary. I turn 21 on the 28th of this month and would LOVE to have to running by then. Hasn't been running for at least 10 months. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Send me a PM for an exchange for phone numbers. Thank you! |

I'm very sorry to hear that. I made the mistake of purchasing a Painless fusebox when I rewired my Mercury. Also had a few other harnesses of theirs for various things. Always been crappy, overpriced, and have always required extensive rework to make them usable.
Should be able to use the stock Chevy harness for wipers. It is fairly stand-alone. Blinkers and tails splice into the Painless harness. Gauges run independent of the main harness. Need a wire from the fuel sender to the gauge, one from the coil to the tach, one from the oil pressure and temp sending units. That's about it. Ground the black, power the lights (tan wires, I think). Voltmeter runs off of a single 12V wire.
Bah... after typing this I see you have a Berli. Digital dash? Might be a bit more of a problem. |

No it's not a digi dash, unless I suck at knowing these things. I really havn't had bad luck with the painless wiring it's been pretty straight forward so far. Just would be nice to have someone who knows what they are doing help out and take a look at my work and let me know if I've been a retard or not. =P |

Do you know if the car was originally a digital dash, and was converted? |

I'm going to work on the Camaro tomorrow is there anything you would like me to take a picture of. It might be digital now that I think of it because it does have a thin paper green paper like thing with lines going all over the place. |

Modern gauge clusters all have the plastic circuit print on the back.
Digital dash looks like so...
Standard dash will have a dial speedometer, and a tach or gas gauge on the right. If you have a base model Berli like Bruce mentioned, it should be easier to rewire. |

One of James' neighbors has a Berlinetta with digital dash, pod radio, and LG4. I'd jump on it if he ever decided to sell. _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

Some progress today. I went over to give Jesse and his dad a hand.
Almost finished up with one of the harnesses on the steering column - the one for the tail lights and directionals. I removed all the wires from the original connector and pushed in the wires from the Painless harness, this one pretty much matched color for color, but there are still two wires originating from the steering column that I haven't figured out yet - light green and light brown (or tan) on the end of the connector.
Ignition switch is connected, needs to be re-installed. Dimmer switch still needs connected (plugs are on the harness) and re-installed along with the actuating rod (it came out when the switches were unmounted) and the wheel needs to come off to fix that.
Under the dash, what remains (as far as I can tell) are the wiper controls, radio, non A/C heater controls and gauges. The only wire remaining on the tail light harness is for the electric fuel pump. _________________ 92 Camaro

Wiring guru Al to the rescue!
Edit; and that digi dash it kind of cool. Way better looking than the regular dash. Albeit usually much less functioning. _________________

A subscription to All-Data would have been nice for the connector locations and wire colors/functions as the Haynes manual was sketchy and didn't show connector numbers or their locations.
The Painless manual was OK, but some of the wire colors didn't match and you're trying to rely on the tiny print on the wires for their identification and wire number. Once you sort that out, it isn't real difficult.
Maybe a suggestion for Dewey that the site gets a subscription for All-Data. I'd gladly put up some funds for the cost of it. |

Using my 88 shop manual, which is not very good at looking up wire colors. I'm not positive where you are looking but it lists the headlight dimmer switch outputs as light green and tan. Green will be hot when the high beams are on, and tan will be hot with low beams. |

The dimmer switch we have figured out and the connectors were already provided with the Painless harness. Maybe Jesse can post the pic he took of the stock connector before we took the wires out and stuffed the new wires in. It's the C210 connector on the bottom of the column (long flat connector) if I read the All-Data diagrams right - thanks Ian. |

Found them, the light green wire comes from the "convenience center" and is shorted to the tan wire with the key in the ignition. the tan wire then goes to the door jab switch and is grounded when the door is open. This makes the sound you get with your door open and key in the ignition. the layout should be pin "F" for the "light green" and pin "E" for the "tan". It's getting late, if this doesn't make sense let me know and I will try and make it better tomorrow. |

Thanks. That means they run to the convenience center and door jamb. He needs to put that back in too if he wants a usable horn, since that houses the horn relay It also explains a couple of wires at the door jamb that I thought may have been for the dome light, that's still all disconnected too. |
