Last week my uncle talked my wife into dragging me to the GreenWood car show. I wasnt totally onboard with this, I mean, cmon man, I car show in downtown Seattle? How many VW's and mopeds would it take before I lost it and told my big three hating, Ralph Nader loving uncle this sucks and I'm leaving. Man was I wrong. Dont get me wrong, there VW's aplenty but it was a great show. I heard there were 700 vehicles entered and believe it.
I only came across two 3rd gens though. One was a 1989 IROC convertible with 30K miles on it. It was really nice, talked to the guy for an hour. He picked it up 4 years ago for 10 grand. He has never been to this site and rarely visits TGO. He said he spends his time on thirdgenresource? I dint get a chance to meet the owner of the 2nd car, a late 80 GTA with blue paint ( his buddy who I did meet said it was originally burgundy) large TT2' rims and very large Bear brakes. The buddy said he had done alot of suspension work to the car but wasnt sure about any engine work. Anyone know who's car this was?
I took my wife and kids home and got after the honey do list. My father inlaw came over for dinner and I thought he enjoyed the car show so I would take him to the local Saturday night hangout in Clearview. I washed both IROC's and asked him to drive my wifes convertible. Since I installed the ZR1 rims it has picked up a weird vibration and I asked him to see what he thinks. it worked, he is going to take the car to his Precision Tune and Lube and rebuild the front end.
Anyhow, while we were checking out the cars in Clearview I came across a bone stock 87 GN with 18K miles. I looked inside and it had a word doc sitting on the front seat. I could not believe what I was reading. Basicaly the new owner was gifted the car one month ago. As I finished reading the story the owner came up and asked if I had any questions. Of course I had a lot of them.
I am not sure if all of this will fit in this post so continue reading the 2nd post.

So the story goes like this -
A small towing outfit in Everette gets a call from EPD asking them to tow a car that is sitting in an intersection. When the cops pull up there were 4 individuals pushing the car but they all ran. The ignition lock was torn out. They pick the car up and take it to their yard. When it gets there the owner ( Mike M) wife removes the belongings. She ( Lisa M) finds the original title and an odometer statement on the passengers seat, both signed but the sigs are not close. Lisa runs the VIN and finds the current ( original) owner. He lives in Everette. She calls him and asks if he knows where his 1987 Buick is, he says " yes, it's in the carport of my other home". She said no it's not, it's in my lot. Long story short, methheads stole the car and broke into the guys empty home and found the title and tried to forge the signatures.
The owner of the tow company ( Mike M, American Towing) talked to the owner and realized the car was his pride and joy and that he was elderly and did not have the meens to fight this injustice. Mike said he would get the car back to him and would store it in his lot free of charge until the court date. The day of the hearing the owner called Mike and said he didnt feel well and couldnt make it to court. If he didnt show up the case would have been dismissed and the car would have gone to the methheads. Mike told the owner of the car he would do what ever it would take to stop this from happeneing. The owner told Mike stop by and I will sign the car over to you. Mike shows up in court and wins. That night Mike and Lisa take the car back to the original owner and try and give it back to him. The guy refuses. During the conversation Lisa asked the guy " how do you know the metheads arent squating in your other home?" the guy said "I dont, heres the keys can you check on it?" They call the EPD and have them meet them at the home. When they open the front door they come across a hordors domain. According to Mike, every inch of floor space in the 2500SQ' home has 3' of stuff on it. The officers told Mike they were going to get the FD involved and the home would be condemend do to being a fire hazard. Mike said he knew the cops and asked them to wait one week before they turned this ion.
Mike and Lisa wound up cleaning out the guys abandoned home on there own time the following week. They filled up a fourty yard dumpster with the debris. Lisa said that the rats were huge and they had to wear respirators do to the rodent droppings, empty beer and wine bottles etc. When it was all said and done, they found millions of dollars of US savings bonds, bonds from the 520 bridge replacement and a trash bag full of King County bonds issued in 1962 that were worth 150K each today.
I dont know if I believe every bit of the story, but the GN had a happy tag in the back window and was original down to the Buick snow chains in the trunck and hard as a rock original rubber. The paint was original as was everything else on the car.
After Mike and his wife told me the story I complimented them for there kidness and honesty. I dont know if this is a true story but if it is it needs to be told. Mike and Lisa are not into cars and are struggling to make ends meet like all of us are in todays economy. If this a true story, count this a win for the good guys. |
