ok so the 91-92 tachs had that wierd problem where they would always read wayyyyy off. i read about it on thirdgen a long time ago and in the post it said how much resitance to put on the microchip for the tach. well anyway i got it to work with the V6 a long time ago, but now i have the right amount of resistance for a V6 and i have a V8....so does anyone know the amount of resistance for a v8? cause i tried and i cant find that post on TGO

Err, its been a while since I did mine, I want to say it was like 196k ohms. Also remeber, if you are having the high reading tach problem, cut the pin off the chip used for the resistance, and wire in the correct resistance across the actual circuit, if you just add more restance until it reads right, as time goes by it will work its way off again.

Basicly, there is a resistor pack chip on the circuit board that drives the tach on the 90-92 camaro's. (don't know if it is the same on the birdies). There is 2 pins that are supposed to have 196k ohm resistance, and over time that restance drops, and the tach reads high.

So, you cut the pin on the chip, and solder in proper resisters to get the correct reading.

Resisters...

Cut pin on the chip.

$.55 resistor + afternoon labor > $155 autometer tach and a few days of install. Very Happy

Hey now, what's wrong with a smooth Autometer dash install?

No need to have this kind of crap going on...

That is why we did the resister mod. On the 90-92 dash, you don't get the clean dash installs so easy. We have half-circle gauges, not the full circle style the early cars have.

Before I sold the IROC I was planning on a 90-92 dash swap for it. There is basically the same amount of usable room in those dashes as there are in the older ones.

This is of course assuming that you have a totally new plate and all new gauges, and don't patch the new tach into the stock dash (like Travis' LT1 car).

*Edit: Found a pic I pulled from TGO way back when I hatched this scheme, and a pic of my old setup for reference. (And yes, I am aware that I single-handedly ruined this topic Razz)

Some of us like stock gauges. And they are reasonably accurate, too. $1 resistor fix is cheaper than $500+ for an Autometer install. I know I like the Autometers, but that $500 has always been hard to spend when I can use it to go faster instead. Razz

I'm glad someone posted this. Been wanting to fix that on my car.

Can someone post a link to a "how to" on here?

I'll try to do that at some point, I will have to go take my gauge cluster out to do that though, so I can get proper pictures.

I meant like a existing writeup on TGO, or some other board. Not that you had to take your car apart and snap pics.
