I installed a Banks Monster exhaust on my 2000 7.3L today. This is a 4" turbo back. The previous owner didn't think a muffler was necessary and had removed it. I've been driving like that for about 4 years and got tired of the loud burble on the freeway. The Banks exhaust still has a burble on the freeway but it is more muted. Around town the Banks is a LOT more quiet outside the truck, but I'm almost certain that it's louder inside the truck. Not the outcome I was wanting. But then again, it's still a whole lot more quiet than my Duramax was with a MBRP 4" turbo back. Didn't notice any difference in engine power. I guess you've got to have a chip to see the benefit of the exhaust. I've got to say, though, that the 5" polished exhaust tip looks mighty fine on my truck. |

| What type of muffler does the Banks kit run? Is it a straight-shot, or louvered? |

| It is a straight tube thru the center of the muffler from end to end that is the same size as the exhaust tubing. The tube has a bunch of perforations and is surrounded by some type of sound dampening. The outer case is fairly large, and a whole lot bigger than the MBRP on my Duramax. That MBRP could barely pass off as a muffler. It was hardly any bigger than the pipes going in and out. |

Sounds like I installed the same exhaust on my brother in law's 2000 7.3L. Came with a new turbo exhaust exhaust housing thing without the backpressure flap, stainless 4" pipe, magna flow type muffler, and a 5" tip. Installation wasn't bad, took me a while up toward the engine though. He's happy with it so I'm happy. _________________ E30

Cool. Presumably they include that same muffler with the exhaust system in their turbo kits, so I'll get some decent sound out of the IDI. |

Once you turbo it you don't need no stinkin muffler.
Jon, mufflers are for old men.
Back when I was logging our pickups had to meet certain criteria to go in the woods, one of those was a muffler on a NA diesel , but could run straight pipe when turboed. Sparks don't get past a turbo. |

I'll take the muffler over being cool any day. At least my ears don't hurt now when I drive next to a concrete barrier. |

That's what made me want a muffler on the bird. I'm ditching the side exit asap. _________________

Used, but still shiny.
It's actually an older 4th-gen setup. The previous owner had it on an '89 IROC. He welded up new brackets, and a flange so it will bolt to a stock cat, but you won't need to worry about that.
The pieces have never been welded together. It came with band-style clamps, no horseshoe BS. |
