I see you have linked to a flat tappet cam in your post. One thing you might want to consider is switching to a roller cam block if you don't already have one. If the engine your planning on doing this to is out of your 92, then it is already a roller motor if it's the original engine. Roller cams have quicker opening and closing rates because the lifter rolls rather than slides across the camshaft lobes, and it takes less horsepower to turn a roller cam.. With today's new oils and the deletion of ZDDP (IIRC) flat tappet cams wear a lot faster now unless you use an additive to prevent this. I found a 4 bolt 350 roller block for $85 at U-Pull-It not too long ago. They blocks are everywhere, cars, vans, pickups, you name it. You don't need a 4 bolt block like I got, just got lucky. Until you get up to well over 400 horses you don't need the extra two bolts on the main caps. For what your planning on spending an extra $100 or so to get a roller block will put you way ahead of the game. The cam may cost you a little more also, but again you will be much closer to your horsepower goal using a roller cam.
I have 238,000 on my car and when I did the valve stem seals I put a dial indicator on and measured the lift of the cam. I had ZERO wear on the cam. Today I'd not even consider building a motor without a roller cam in it. The benefits easily outweigh the cost.
You also might want to check your compression ratio with the heads/pistons you have chosen. A quick calculation tells me your ratio will be about 10.6 to one with a .041 head gasket and a zero deck block. Kinda high for a street motor on pump gas if this is your intended usage. _________________ Member of the "Elite T56 Club" , big brake club, and "burgundy" (not red or maroon) car owner.

You are totally correct about zinc additives. You mostly only need them for break in, however, if you don't run them during break in, your engine will fail within a few k miles. There was a writeup on this in hot rod a few months ago. I think roller is the way to go, I'm getting ready to buy all the stuff to convert my top end to all roller, and at some point in the next couple years going to just toss the whole thing and put an LT1 in it, so it's all roller. I do have some flat tappet stuff I've built recently, namely a 225 slant six for my dart, and I really regret not modifying it to be a roller, would have been a lot of custom work, but well worth it. _________________ 1986 Camaro Z-28 IROC-Z 350 swap |

| It's more then just break in. When mobil took the zinc out of their synthetic I lost my comp cam in short order. Engine had 50k miles on it.. so it was well broken in. |

Ok, better late than never.
As for the block and all that, it's a '77 block, it the whole flat tappet cam deal was mostly budget, also didn't know somthing special had to be done to put a roller cam in there..
i got that combo talking to my neighbor. so i figured i'd post it and see what kind of response it got. I know about the whole zinc deal for break-in's and all that.
so another dumb question here, with that compression ratio being what it is, is it gona be that bad? it's gona be a "weekend driver" mostly, i just want it to be good enough to be drivin on the road, and be somthing that if i want to i can take to a drag strip and get at least in the 12's..
and the engine's going in my chevelle. not the camaro, camaro's gonna get either a lower miled 3.1 or a rebuild of what it's got in it now for the purpose of being a daily driver and decent fuel econo |
