So yeah I guess I've been a little quiet. Things around me are moving at warp speed so I've been trying to keep up!

Over the summer some of you know I pulled the motor in the Maro to fix my low oil pressure. Upon reinstalling, my oil pressure was worse. AT the minimum of the rule of thumb. Then I pulled the pan and put a HV pump on to accomodate the EDM lifters. That gave me an extra 5psi but, 15psi at idle is no bueno.

So upon finding out a problem at work on another engine, I promtly pulled the engine and had my thoughts verified. While the motor was out the first time, I put new cam bearings in because I was there and they were 3 cams deep now! LOL anyways, I was tought improperly on installation technique. The first 4 are installed flush, the rear bearing must go 3/8" farther into the block, or you'll leave the oil galley passages to the lifters completely open.

Sigh.

So here it is.

While I was at it I joined the cool pan club and made my oil pan a 6qt, replaced my starter with one that acutally spins at the proper speed!

So there's my Maro update.

Cold: 70psi idle, 100psi cruise
Hot: 30psi idle, 60psi cruise

Mazda update:

On the carb there is a float bowl vent solenoid. 12v key on opens the vent. It's for emissions and roll over.

Anyways... it shorted and actually started smoking on the way home one day! Caught it just in time. No damage.

Easily bypassed if you take the top of the carb off and don't care about DEQ.

So I pulled the carb top and was disgusted at what I saw. It was like a little tadpole arena! Crusty and gross. Can't believe the car ran so well. So the carb had to come off for a rebuild.

Then I took the intake off and replaced it with one I modified and ported. Comparisons in the pictures. Comepletely welded and smoothed the Air Control Valve (basically like the f-body diverter valve, but built into the intake.) And needed to put my header on because the original heat shielding bolted to the intake, and I removed those bosses. I also built an aluminum heatshield to go between the two.

Then, I find my clutch slave cylinder was leaking. Of course it's mounted ontop of the bellhousing, so the clutch started slipping BADly and is toast. So I finished rebuilding my spare transmission (the one in the car had a 3rd gear rake, bad synchro.).

New clutch and new trans!

Been a busy bugger. She's definitely louder just by removing the goofy chamber log manifold, and adding a Header. I even added a 3" resonator! It's still got louder than it was! Amazing for a 1.1L with two little exhaust ports and a full size muffler that doesn't flow for shizzle.

Should be able to do better than 88HP from last year. Especially if my ebrake cable isn't strapped down engaged this time like It was last year!

Awesome work! Really glad to hear that the camaro is all fixed. That oil pressure issue was driving you insane I know. What starter did you change to? Same lt1 or get a mini? I'm really satisfied with the Summit mini I bought from summit. I know my battery's about trash but it still spins this motor over real easy.. and its nice and quiet.

Mazda stuff looks cool, but question is.. how's it perform on the butt dyno?

Both if I can afford it. Would like to see that the maro stayed the same LOL and would like to see the improvement in the rotary.

Of course I fabbed it! Aftermarket pans wont clear the 3" exhaust between the K and Pan. I would have added some girth on the drivers side, but the O2/Slave/Scatter shield would make it a large chore to remove the oil filter!

I sent my starter to our starter/alternator outfit in Portland called PMX. He said on his Starter output that LT1 starter should read 25-30amps.... he said it read negative like it was running backwards. So he got me a replacement for $100 and it works like a top.

Definitely more snoot in the mazda above 3k. Falls off around 6k though. Should pull to 7. Don't know if that's limited air flow from the air cleaner, or a weak pump.

Hope your dizzy gear holds up with that... and make sure you always use a quality filter. Cheapies will blow out, or push the element into the motor with that much pressure.

But ya.. thats a whole lot better then before. Smile

Always use a Wix. That's only reved up cold. Doesn't go passed about 60-65 hot.

That was as much for other readers as you, I've got similar but not quite as high pressure too. Can reach 100psi if I get on it before letting it warm up enough.

Wix, K&N, mobil.. filters i'd trust with that much psi.

Did you do any sort of increased baffling/trapdoors inside the pan?

No, it wasn't a large enough area to warrent it. Plus the pickup on the Melling Select pumps is rather large.

I just wanted a little extra capacity.

There's a large baffle at the forward height that wraps around the pickup.
