|

I relocated my ignition coil, so it wouldn't be directly over the valve cover and exhaust manifold. It's against the firewall, it's the MSD blaster coil 8226 and I used the included aluminum brackets to attach it. After doing all that, it's making a whining/spark noise, equal to rpms. It's not loud, but annoying, almost like it comes from the speakers or inside the dash and the coil barely makes noise as I need to put my ear against it to hear it. Did I do something wrong? The car runs fine. I was checking the spark plugs first, and then decided to move the coil so it doesn't get too hot. Runs better because i regapped the plugs and cleaned them.
My stereo is messed up, its buffer amp goes out all the time and I end up listening to every station in the area at once...could it be picking up the coil? I turn the stereo off and it still makes the noise. No wires under the hood are touching, I rerouted all of them, none are exposed, ground is all good.
It's my daily driver and I do close to 120 miles a day. I don't want it to die on me |

Problem located...need either plastic brackets, or move it off the body of the car. Too much EMI, the antenna and the speakers are picking up the interference, like that V8 sound plug-in thingy, I get a high pitched rev in the speakers, sounds horrible and annoying. I underestimated the power of 48,000 volts and 220 mA. And I went to training for this...sad. |

| Bolt it to the heater box if you don't have A/C. |

| I have A/C. Hopefully come summer I won't have it...the engine bay is getting a nice make-over. That 3.4 will finally go in... |

Hmmm some coils wont work right unless they are grounded. Like the Jacobs. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |

That's me right there. I did it cause it'll stay cool, I don't have any speakers to buzz and whine anyway so feedback was no issue.
I was worried about it not working right without a ground like Paul said, but mine seems to be fine! _________________ 84 Camaro Z28 - LS1/T56

| It works perfectly, minus the EMI on the speakers. Can't hear it at highway speeds, but can't listen to the radio as it sounds like it's under water. Boo. |

I used to hear a whining like that in my old 87. I finally got around to trying to figure out why and the amp that was installed in the back had like 50ft of extra crappy speaker wiring that picked up all the interference. As soon as I took that out it never made the noise again. _________________

Coiled all together? A rudimentary inductor coil...that's how extension cords and christmas lights can catch on fire.
I relocated it about two inches away, attached to some plastic, so it's still out of a direct heat source, and doesn't cause interference with the speakers/antenna.
Resonated through the brackets, onto the firewall, and then picked up by the speakers and disrupted the antenna. |

| Ran mine on top of the A/C delete box for years with a full stereo and amp in the spare tire well with no troubles at all. Was running a stock Chebbie coil with extended harness; nothing fancy. |
