I came across this while browsing for other stuff. Thought it pretty interesting. Maybe the forerunner to the Snow-Cat? I thought the screw design rather than tracks was neat Cool

Novel idea, but looks a little dangerous if you were to fall off the side. Shocked

Thought I'd posted this a long time ago, but evidently just showed it to a couple people.

Most anything is pretty dangerous if you fall off the side! LOL

I looked that up too. That one is in the Antique Truck museum in Woodland, CA.

From that link...

"It has twin screw drives and is capable of hauling a ton at 12 mph. This machine used to carry the US mail and freight in the Truckee area of the California Sierra Nevada Mountains. Hays Antique Truck Museum Woodland, California."

The various videos available on You-Tube and others have concept dates from 1924 or 1929

That is awesome. I wonder how they got the screws to slow down so they can turn though.

From Wikipedia...

"Steering was effected by having each cylinder receive power from a separate clutch which, depending on the position of the steering gear, engages and disengages; this results in a vehicle that is relatively maneuverable."

Thats the same way most cat's steer. John Deere cat's use a clutch and then a brake. Pull back a little bit and one track is disengaged, pull back more and the brake locks that track. Some other brand's like case used just a brake, but they also use a torque convertor instead of a clutch setup.

Don't they still use that cork-screw design in some machines in the arctic?
