My younger brother and I have been into cars since being teenagers, and over the years there has been this odd competition between us with our cars. This past spring he picked up an 05 GTO with an auto transmission. I supported him with the purchase and actually test drove the car for him.
Two weeks later he egged me into running my 87 IROC against his goat. I thought my car would lose, and my bro was sure it would. My car makes more tourqe but doesnt feel like it had the top end to keep up. I was wrong, and my bro has been irritated since. We both had crap tires so we went from a roll, 30 MPH. He pulled me at first by a couple feet, then I pulled him by a car on the top end of 2nd and started pulling away in 3rd.
So....since then he as added an SLP tune, CAI, cat back and super sticky tires. He also has a set of Kooks headers and mid pipes waiting to be installed. He wants to run my car again before he install the headers and mids on his goat.
We will probably be running again tomorrow, from a dig and a roll. I still think the 87 IROC will hold it's own against the GTO. My brother plans on making a vid of the race.
Stay tuned for the outcome.
I think my bro just wants to have a leg up for a couple of months, he has seen the AFR 195cc Eliminators in my garage and knows he will have to do more to keep up. |

Thanks for the encouragement. I think the goat will pull me more on the bottom and stay even on the top end. He should get me by a car and a half in the 1/4 if he doesnt mess up.
My bro has a .610 lift cam, headers and valve springs waiting to be installed for the next round. I think he knows that we will still be close after I install the AFR's and cam in the little 350 in my car. |

Well what happened is what I expected. My car spun all the way into drive ( 70 mph) and my brothers GTO had about 2 to 2.5 cars on me at 110 ish mph. What I didnt expect was the sever pinging that happened when my car shifted into drive. I actually let off for a split second then got back in it.
My brother invited I guy he knows with an almost stock 04 6speed GTO also. I thought for sure my car would have been faster than the 04, but I lost by about a car length. I babied it out of the whole then matted the throttle and spun until 60 mph. The 04 GTO owner did a fantastic job, got the hole shot with little tire spin and no lift shifted to a 1 car leed. This time the pinging started at about 4k rpm in 2nd and continued until the check engine light came on in drive.
I need to bump the fuel pressure back up and re install the LS1 injectors. I forgot that I cranked the pressure down and swapped injectors this past winter while trying to trouble shoot a different issue.
Almost forgot, my brother mounted his camera in my car then took it out to charge it while we were waiting for his friend. His friend also forgot his camera. My brother did get a video on his phone but it's really blurry and the sound sucks. |
