I think you can solder a potentiometer or a different resistor in to make the V6 tach correct for the V8. Stock it wouldn't be correct at all.

I seem to recall finding that resistor on my car when I had the cluster out just to see where it was. Also, that's the procedure for fixing the later style dash tachs that have a habit of being hugely incorrect.

i had to fix my tach by soldering resistors to the chip for the tach i think the resistance for the v6 is 265k ohms and for V8 195k ohms not quite sure tho, i have the numbers saved somewhere

Give that a try. It's for 90-92 tachs, but the info is good for earlier ones also. Plus there's another thread specifically about the old ones somewhere on TGO also.
