Smoke when starting up is a $50 fix. Headliner... just take it out. I've run without for years. Even a new one is under $200.

I hardly see that as running you dry!

all I can suggest is to enroll in drivers ed, get good grades 3.0 and better. (its not that hard and it is worth it) and put car in a parents name have them insure it and add you to the policy. Even if you pay all of it, it should be much less than 350 per month that way.

Unless I'm mistaken, It does happen, then you need drivers ed to get the license anyway at 16. So not having drivers ed should be a nonstarter anyway.

http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/teens.html

Now I'm not preaching about what you have to have, but clearly your trying to do it all above board and as such drivers ed is required for the license any way, so get that quote again, include drivers ed and see where it stands. Also pretend you are your mom include her age etc and add a teen driver see what it says. I insured my 17 year old in an acura for 50.00 above my policy. keep shopping and mess with the numbers you plug in.

Driver's ed should pay for itself in about six months bro. Plus you need to get your car (and yourself) put on your parents policy, at least until you're 18. That should bring it down to the 100-150 per month range.

BTW, if you've only got base liability, they're not going to differentiate between your Firebird and any other car anyway.

Your insurance is gonna be sky high no matter what you drive. Your a teenage driver with "no experience".

Go get them quotes on them other cars and I bet they might be 20-30 bux cheaper a month.

Ask about any discounts you can get as mentioned... drivers ed, good student, defensive driving(yes, thats another class), etc.

I agree with everyone else. Get quotes on several other cars. When I first bought my camaro, (I has just turned 1Cool, the insurance really was not all the much more than it was on my old Datsun wagon. Being a teenager, insurance is going to be expensive, there is no way around that. IIRC, I paid $187/mth when I was 18 for the camaro, with full coverage (hey, it was still a semi-new car then!), my datsun, with ONLY liability cost me $130/mth. Liability alone on the camaro would have been about $140, so that was not much of a change.

I would also talk to your parents about trying to get on a driver on their policy, that will make the single biggest difference in the cost of your insurance. My same Datsun, when I was 16, and on my parents policy, cost a whopping $26/mth to add on their policy, compared to the $130 I has to pay for it on my own policy after I turned 18.

Is it the Firebird, or can you just not afford insurance on any car? When I was your age there was very little difference between a Firebird and an Escort.

i am on the insurance with my dad and it says that the Firebird is his primary vehicle and i drive a ford contour, so it works out to be cheaper that way,
(but i really drive the Firebird if that confused you)

you should try it that way if your parents will let you.

or you could trade for my little v6! that would make it cheaper! Laughing

Hate to say it but your VW or AUDI WILL be more expensive to insure than the thirdgen.

Liability shouldn't cost more than 150-180$ on your own policy if you have good grades and a clean record.

Nah shes not afraid you'll wreck it. She's afraid you will get a ticket.
If you carry basic liability ins. and you wreck it, then you are SOL. She doesn't report it to the company and they never know. However If you get a Ticket there aint no hidin it.

The Audi or VW will cost more than a 3rd gen cause the ins. company will see a teenager living in a congested area (more stuff to hit) driving a ricer/tuner (temptation to race)

When you buy insurance what you are really doing is betting the company that you WILL get tickets or have an accident. You are saying that you are going to cost money. They, the company, are betting that you won't cause trouble. So that being the case think about it logically, your 16 with no DL, you live in an urban area and want to drive a fairly popular and sporty car. XYZ auto insurance company has decades of experience insuring millions of people and believe it or not they know what they are doing.

If you want to lower the cost, then make yourself a better gamble for them. Become female (yes girls drive better, just accept it), Get good grades, shows responsibility. Take drivers ed, required by law and shows some basic education. Take defensive driving course, shows maturity and responsibility. Move out into the sticks where there aint no one to race and nothing to hit, kinda like living in a rubber room. And get on parents ins., shows adult supervision.
If mom won't let you on her policy, and you don't want a sex change, then focus on grades, drivers ed, the smith system of defensive driving, and buy a Yugo.
Now the shady guy that lives in me says that there is the possibility of buying ins online and telling them that you live in rural Wahkiakum county. have the ins company send the card to someone you can trust and forward it to you. And there instant proof of insurance. There is no law that says you can't drive outside of your zip code, so if you do get a ticket in Tacoma, just tell Barney that your family just moved but the insurance messed up the replacement card and put the old address, your waiting on the new card. Hmm that would be unethical and illegal and would serve to stick it to the insurance company. All very good reasons not to do it Wink

Right. No way. They just get into different accidents. Guys hit shat being macho/racing/careless and women hit shat because they're not paying attention/they can't estimate distances properly/they put themselves in bad situations.

Your mileage may vary.
