Just ran into some interesting info on a few websites. Seems Valvoline has done some independent testing of one grade of mobil 1 synthetic. And the mobil 1 didnt even pass the minimum required specifications for the current government standard. One of the valvoline memo's says they tested the mobil multiple times and it failed miserably every time. Over twice the allowable wear during cold start up.

Anyway, here are some links to the info.

Interesting study, ExxonMobil will be hurting for that one!

I've been using royal purple since my 50k mile 350 had a comp cam go flat.. I had been using mobil 1 in it the whole time too. I have been putting M1 in the wifes yota though. Might be time to rethink that.

I had been using M1 in the birds 305 until I started at Chev when I swapped over to RP because it was cheaper there. I think I'll stick with RP for now...

I use 4 quarts of Castrol GTX on the 2001 camaro and I add about a 3/4 quart of 10-30 royal purple, and a Napa gold/Wix filter on every oil change.

The 1986 camaro. got Delo 15-40w and a whole bottle of crane cam break-in lube. I only ran about 400 miles on it since the rebuild though, and its been down since August.

I'm not sure what is going on for sure. It has a massive shaking motion thingy at idle. Like something is seriously out of balance, it shakes the whole car justsitting at idle. I still need to pull the accessories off the front and make sure it isn't somwthing simple. If that doesn't help then pull the tranny and check the clutch/flywheel.

Brandon, I had the heads rebuilt last winter. The short block, dad and I put together back in 2002.

Ah K. That makes more sense. I thought you'd done the whole thing before dyno last time.. then lost power and mph. This sounds like your rings have probably been going too.

Is your motor rebuildable again? I've got one mexican 4 bolt core around. And dad has a 50k mile running 4bolt 350 he would probably sell. It didnt run good, been sitting quite awhile.. but it did drive that green crew cab into the shop where I took it apart. And it was still running all the original tune up stuff.

Yeah, it's still a 4.000" bore. I did some reading and it seems that a couple guys have had problems with the ring of weights on the Centerforce clutch. Seems they can get all caddywhompass and cause this kind of a problem too. I'm gonna try and get it in the shop in the next couple weeks and do some trouble shooting.

Depends on which Valvoline. One of the racing oils is good the regular isn't.

I'm going to run some Pennzoil GT 25w-50 in the maro. Change it here in the next few weeks. Maybe try to replace the pan gasket too. Hipo motor uses a little oil and leaks a little. Can't justify spending on the RP if it's just gonna get used or leak out.

I dont know much about the Pennzoil GT grade, but I'm suprised to hear you say that, especally as you flattened a lobe on your last cam, I kind of would have thought you might have learned the "cheap insurance" lesson from buying more expensive oils, but you may know something I do not.

I'm not suggesting you should spend the extra $$ on the RP, just wondering your rationality with the decision more than anything. even with the minor seepage issue and consumption of oil issue.

please esplain Dr. Hardcore.

I have never even seen that GT Pennzoil, Im surprised that all the major oil brands don't offer a specail oil that has the higher ZDDP levels...

How long would a flat-tappet engine even last using the wrong oil?
I have been trying to warn my girlfriends dad to do research on this topic, but he insists on the cheap stuff in his ol' 350 C20 pickup. Rolling Eyes

If he's running weak stock valve springs and a slow easy stock cam, it will probably live.

There are lots of additives now specifically for the ZDDP levels. Crane and GM EOS are the ones I'd use for sure. Comp's additive sucks.

Even with the GT oil I'll run a half bottle of the Crane.
