Smoke on startup, or the 'chevy salute', is often attributed to worn valve stem seals. I would keep track of the consumption, that is how many miles before you have to add a quart of oil to top off, for a period of time to determine if it is excessive.
If usage is excessive it may indicate a more serious issue. For what it is worth, My brand new 1988 Trans Am gave the chevy salute about 10k miles into it's life. Was never really an issue, just a bit embarassing

x2. The IROC isn't an oil burner (yet), but I noticed a substantial pressure increase when going from 5W30 Mobile1 to 10W40 Royal Purple. |

You can get three quarts of Delo for the price of one quart of RP, Greg.
Paul was mentioning hot pressure problems with the Delo, but my RP still only has maybe 13-15psi at 750rpm when fully hot. |

| for oil, 15/40W would be a viscosity rating of 15 hot and 40 cold right? Since 15 is nearly stock it wouldn't be very thick at all but almost right? |

15 cold, 40 hot.
We live in a pretty temperate climate, so I don't worry about running a little heavier oil. |

The 5W-30 is probably a bit thin, does it make any valvetrain noises?
even a small block in it's prime, I would recomend atleast a 10W-30. _________________

Well it makes sense for oil to be thinner at start-up so the oil can quickly pump thru the engine so you don't have a dry start. _________________

Delo FTW. I used it in my Miata due to their inherit lifter tap on cold start. (bad head design)
Delo worked great at keeping my motor clean and supremely lubricated. _________________

It seems counter intuitive that oil gets thicker as it heats up. Ah well. Learn something new (or things i forgot again) every day. |
The idea behind multi-viscosity oil is to keep the temp changes from having such a dramatic effect. The oil needs to "act" thicker as it heats up to keep it from thinning out drasticaly. |

How accure is your pressure gauge john? I've got the autometer on and it's pretty sensative. The Delo is definitely a low pressure high temp oil. Right off idle pressure is up though. Since I'm no cop car I don't idle around lol.
20w50 isn't too thick for around here. if we're in sustained 20F below temps maybe think about 10w. Especially on a high milage motor. |
