|
|
I got the brake stuff removed from the new rear end, everything was pretty well shot. Driver's side rotor only had one friction surface (I believe that's why the car was in the wrecking yard). Over the last couple of nights, and today, I spent a couple of hours cleaning it up and getting it ready for new brakes. Monday, my new calipers arrive, and with the cores I have, I'll order the rotors and lines and cables. Except for replacing the gasket and changing the oil, as soon as I get the brakes, it's ready to go on the car. I just need a weekend with cooperative weather...
All cleaned up and ready for brake components.

It's just a little better than my 3.08. It's a 3.23. I thought I'd go with a red/black theme
When I finally get to installing this, I think I'll also get the front off the ground and install all my new steering parts and poly bushings. |

| I replaced the gasket and emptied the fluid this morning. My parts guy wasn't sure how much it takes, so he sold me 3 quarts (better safe than sorry). How much gear oil does it take? I can't find a capacities chart that lists it. 2 quarts fills it to 2 - 3 inches from the cover with the pinion pointing down. |

You're supposed to have it in the car essentially ( so pinion is roughly horizontal).... and you fill through the side plug until fluid starts coming out.
Typically it's around 2qts. |

| Thank you Paul. 2 quarts in, buttoned it up, turned it horizontal and removed the plug to check the level and oil just starts to come out. |

| Just got the stuff my parts guy at NAPA recommended (other than the expensive stuff). NAPA gear oil, SAE 80W-85W-90. |

It's got it in it, or so I gather from the bottle. "Recommended for a wide range of applications and is for use in manual transmissions and both regular and limited slip differentials." Straight from the label |

DO NOT RUN NAPA BRAND POSI/LIMITED SLIP ADDITIVE!!!!!!!
And I think the oil is just saying it's compatible. Not that it has it in it. Napa has their own tube/bottle of additive. STAY AWAY!
It's too slippery and your posi clutches will wear at a rapid rate.
Go to GM. Get the GM brand bottle of limited slip additive. Use about 3/4 of the bottle with 2 fresh quarts of fluid.
I didn't realize this was a posi rear.
I just run the Valvoline 85w90 with the GM additive.

I think you might still want a tube of the additive Al. Maybe Brandon will chime in , but I have always added the additive regardless of what oil.
BTW, that looks nice all painted up. |

Thanks for the info..
Since I haven't added anything (didn't know about the stuff), I'll pick some up before I get this in the car. It's available at the parts counter at GM?? |

I've only ever seen it at GM, but we don't have a Westbay down here.
It's about $8 a bottle. |

West Bay is a Kitsap County operation. They actually bought out all the NAPA stores in the county so now all the West Bay stores also carry the NAPA name.
I found a bottle, it was $10 here. |
