Alright guys, as some of ya’ll know (or at least who were up at the gathering or who I have seen since then), some of us were talking about how to get my 82 TA back on the road on the cheap.

Currently it has a 350 Crossfire FI and a 200c trans (engine is not stock, it’s an 86/88 GM crate motor). Crossfire ran like crap last time I ran the car and the trans slipped a bit. Anyways, Brandon (chevymad) suggested to just convert to a carbed setup…and completely ditch and get rid of all the computer stuff

Thus, I am looking at these parts (or if I can find any comparable used parts that would be even better – let me know if ya’ll have anything)

a performer intake

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_18708_-1

choice of 600cfm carb
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_11348_-1

large cap hei distributor

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_43116_-1
http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_608984_-1

Also I believe Brandon said I’d also need a fuel pressure regulator? Not exactly sure which one I would need. Bear in mind Im not expert on this stuff, crew has helped me out a lot.

Another thing on the list to do is to swap the 200c trans w/ a TH350, so I am looking for one of those (if I can find a good used one that would be good, or find a shop to rebuild one)

And lastly, because the car has been sitting so long…there is some brake fluid puddles on the floor under the front brakes. It was said I’d probably just need a couple of calipers, couple of wheel cylinders, and all new hoses. These pretty easy to get?

Ideas/opinions/thoughts…feel free to give input. Still in the planning stage, looking to get some good advice and help to get it setup as good as I can for now.

I've a friend at work with a TH-350 for sale. It's a bit pricey but it's built to the hilt. As built it has zero miles on it.

Does the CFI have a electric fuel pump? If so, the fuel pressure regulator is a Must, to bring it to a usable 7-8psi for the carb.

I got lucky, with both the 85 Z/28 and the Berlinetta I have now, they were the CCC Rochesters, So all I needed was a non-cc carb, Dizzy with a Vaccum advance and pull the ECM and computer harness and I was set.

If you're not looking for a big time performance car, you might consider going to the boneyard for a Crossmember, buy a new mount (they're like $20) and going with a 700R4 instead of the TH350 or 200C.

Check the hardware on the front (calipers, bleeder valves, lines themselves for leaks) Try a good bleeding of the entire brake system. If it still leaks after all that, might try to isolate the source of the leak, and replace part(s) as needed.

All in All it doesn't sound like it'd take much to get the TA on the road, if those are the only problems.

fish i know you are not supper mechanical, but you can get rebuild kits for the calipers. if the seals are all thats wrong they can be replaced. would knock the cost down a bit.

and if you are going with new lines...

i don't know why thats so expensive. seems like i paid around half that for mine through ed miller on TGO...

This is practically the same setup I have right now! The edelbrock intake and a holley 600 CFM carb. it works well for me.

as far as a fuel pressure regulator goes, wouldn't it be better to pull the in-tank fuel pump and just replace it with a mechanical one? thats what i did and it has given me ZERO problems so far.

700R4 seems to be a good idea, I'm not sure all the differences between that and the th350 except one's a 4 and one's a 3 and i like having 4 gears.

Is this just going to be a cheap deal to get it on the road or are you looking for some performance out of it, take it from me, and probably chris, a stock 350 SBC with constricting heads and exhaust (all came from the factory like this) is NOT all its cracked up to be. You may think about sticking in a mild cam while you have the intake off, its a pretty cheap upgrade for what its worth.

Going for cheap, as cheap as possible...Just want to get it running for now so I can move it around, and maybe make a backup daily driver if need be. Once I get the Chargers done, maybe ill take this car apart and throw it on the rotisserie...

thought about that, but it seems as if finding a good rebuilt th350 is much easier than a 700r4. looking at the paperwork, the previous owner paid 1800 bucks for the rebuild of 700r4 in my Yellow 87 TA. ive seen some th350s for 600 - 800 bucks with warranty (would like to find one for less)

CFI should have an electric pump, it fired the same injectors as TBI, so it should run at 8-13psi. I don't know on a car that early, if it has the same in tank style pump as the later cars though.

If all you want is to move the car around a little and have a backup driver for maybe a total of 1 week out of the year... wouldn't it be cheaper instead of replacing induction setup and transmission, to just figure out what's wrong w/ current setup, fix the brakes, and go with it?

You're talking ~600-900 for a turbo350, maybe 100 for a x-member (since no 3rd gens came w/ a TH350), ~500 for carb, intake, misc gaskets and sealants... so 1100-1400? You'd probably spend less than that if you sent the car to a dealership and had them get the car running (dont mention it's not the stock motor or they'll send you elsewhere lol), then do the brakes yourself.

Just my thoughts.

lmao, true enough I suppose. Then again, if he had it fixed at a dealership he can always just keep bringing it back saying "welp, you guys fixed it last week and now it's broke again. I demand it gets fixed for free this time, it should have been done right the first time!" Even though you know it's not their fault Wink This happens on nearly a weekly basis for me, some A-hole will bring his car in to get wrenched on, I'll fix it, note a few things I see obviously wrong with it, then he'll come back a week or two later and claim that "ever since we fixed the car, ____ hasnt worked right". Bungholes.

Our customers do the same thing. Even long term ones. Just had one we've helped for years claim that their motor burnt up because we left the radiator cap loose. They're filing a claim even.

As for the th350, he has a th200 in the car now so the th350 should be a near bolt in. Driveshaft fits th350 and is too long for 700r4s. Shouldnt be a problem with the crossmember either. Only deal is the tq arm mount. GM didnt put a th350 in these cars, but they did sell a retrofit kit in the 80s that included a tailhousing/spacer and th350 for a direct bolt in. I just removed this setup from my car. There's a 2" spacer between a 700r4 tailshaft and the trans case. This allowed all the mounts, driveshaft, and tq arm to bolt right on. Actually, fish if you wait just awhile longer, I may sell this setup. It has a b&m stage II kit in it right now too. You'd have to get a 700r driveline though, because its a longer shaft trans.

As for the CFI setup, there's no way I'd spend a dime on one. Think of it the same way as rebuilding a 305. A total waste. Did you know the runners in a CFI intake are so small that you can plug them with your thumb?? The TB's are actually iron duke pieces. Junk. I'd just get a regulator and use the intank pump myself. No need to pull the tank or anything like that. Now if the pump went bad, then maybe i'd put a mechanical setup on it.

you can get the driveline at any junkyard. try and find an aluminum one, a steel one will work. this seems like the way to go. as much ass as a 700 would kick (overdrive is good) a chevymad built tranny is the next best thing. if brandon built it you know it will last.

one question though, why not go with a 5 speed?

hey fish... i have a 1983 3 speed auto shift knob with button in realy good shape if you are interested. i am sure it could be made to work witha th350 shifter. it's the same one that they used in the tvshow (because that is what came on the cars from pontiac of course).

so if yours is in bad shape or missing or somthing....

for real though... go stick. if you slap the "KR" shift knob on there no one will notice the difference. Cool
