I have had a problem with my driver's side window ever since I bought my 89. I tried to dig into it today to take care of the rattles and what not. No matter what type of adjustments i made, powering the window down from full up starts with a mechanical pop, and with the window partway down, I can grab the front and back edges and rock it back and forth as if it is only attached at the bottom center. Trying to tighten everything up, I just can't get rid of that movement. All the rivets seem to be in place and tight. My guess is that the regulator is worn out. It's got a re-manufactured motor in it and it operates faster than the passenger side.

Al, I know this is gunna be a PITA, but probably the best solution would be to take the motor/regulator out, manually inspect it, hook it up with it out of the car and see if you can see where it's making the noise at.

If you cant see where it's coming from after you have those out of the car, then while it's out you should check to make sure the tracks are in there tight, and all the "etc" hardware and parts are intact and not worn.

I think I have found the mechanical "pop" when the window starts down from full up. I have a stress fracture on the upper rivet to the regulator, when the window is full up, it pushes the door panel in somewhat and and it moves the two edges of the crack. When the window starts down, the metal snaps back. Something I'll have to fix when removing the regulator. I still think the regulator is shot too.

You said that you replaced the motor on the driver side? Did you put those rivets in too? 3/4" 1/4-20 bolts with washers seem to work good with me. I've gutted/rebuilt a couple of doors and seen those stress cracks too.

I haven't replaced anything to do with the window yet, previous owner put a new motor in (labeled re-manufactured). Looks to me like a regulator is in order, and yes I have to domething about that stress crack.

This is a common problem. When I re-did my interior, I had to weld up 3 stress fractures on the driver's side door, as well as replace 3 rivets. When the window nears the top, you'll actually notice the interior frame/panel flex. There's a lot of stress in the window mechanism movement. You won't be able to eliminate that, but you can mitigate it partly by ensuring the stops are set correctly up top (at the top of travel).

I have the same exact cracks and until I get a new welder I just used large fender washers along with a nut/bolt.
