so i have been spending a good amount of time on craiglist now that i have figured it out (don't ask, i'm retarded) and after you all got me thinking more about the lt1 swap i wanted to do for a long time. the result of all this is i am thinking i will get another 3rd gen to be my project i have seen a couple potential on craiglist that i will be trying to check out here soon i hope...dunno if i wanna try a bird this time or stick with another camaro....i am plenty of extra cash so i figure this will be a fun way to blow it....plus it saves me trying to do stuff to my primary car and end up stuck at home cuz i blew my *insert PITA to change car part here*

who here thinks i should go with a total beater and learn body work and interior at same time, or should i stick purely to looking for a nice car i am mechanically fiddle with?

Comming from a guy who has had to do all of the above to his project camaro, I say there are plus and minuses to both. I have had my car for about 2 years now and i just finished new paint and interior work and NOW i can start fiddling with suspension, engine, and other go-fast parts. Its been a PITA and talk about time consuming. I'll admit it would have been nice to have a car that already had all this done already.

HOWEVER if you get a beater, it gives you the chance to make the car fully your own. You can customize the paint, interior to fit your style and what you want exactly instead of settling for what someone else already did.

Choose wisely Very Happy

Whatever you feel are your strong points, be it body work, electrical, mechanical, suspension, steering, brakes, etc.... find a car that needs work in that area (and that's why you are getting it cheap Wink ).

Personally I would look for one with a good body, not in need of a paint job, with a decent shape interior. If they took care of the exterior and interior, they probably did regular maintenance and the car will probably be in a lot better shape all around. Where-as a car with dents and flaking paint and primer spots all over, with a ripped out headliner and scarred seats would probably not have been taken as good care of mechanically, and you never know where the fixing ends and the modding begins.

Martin, if i were you i would just throw the money at your car, just get the truck up to bellingham and put the camaro out of use for a little bit while we work on it. Thats what i would do. Why have get another project when you can do work on the one you already have. That's what i would do. Very Happy

Yup yup I'm with stupid

The interior isn't as big of a deal since third-gen interiorss are essentially modular, and any one piece can be replaced easily. Unless you're really into body work, and can see yourself spending an entire day sanding, I'd look for a Norwood car with a stock V8 and some sort of handling package, then swap in your engine.

Shocked Shocked an entire day?! try more like an entire month! You'd have to be a pro to only need a day to do bodywork.

i dunno if i wanna another one....i think it would be best to get one with a nice body and needs other work, a nice fun project car....my truck blows and i can't drive it to work everyday with gas being 3.55/gal and 20 miles to get to work....that would cost me 8+ bucks a day to goto work and back :-p

:edit:

BODY WORK SUCKS. Get a straight body and do a swap.

Body can be a pain in the butt, but to me its kind of been an afterthought.

I'd rather have something that is primered with a few spots that need attention (no major dings or dents) that is mechanically sound.

Just my .02.

But if you are the one to paint it, you can make it look exactly the way you want, not how the guy before you wanted it.
