Usually when your headliner starts raining brown dust into your car, it's generally a pretty good indicator that it's shot. I've got a new set of t-top seals being shipped in now to solve the leaking problem, but I figured while I had all the trim out of the car I might as well rip down the headliner.

Buying a new ABS liner is kinda low on the priority list, so I was wondering if it's possible to just remove the old liner and fiberglass crap, and just run bare metal. Also, will the fiberglass portion of the headliner come out easily, or will it start crumbling up on me?

I was thinking of just pulling the tops, throwing a big tarp over the seats, and then tearing the entire thing down. Any better ways to get it out of there?

I pulled the liner off my ttop car. It doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look great. You can see all the metal webbing. Looks better than a crappy liner though! If you are really worried about it, maybe paint it to match the interior, or black.

It will crumble and make a big mess when you take it out. The hardest part will be the dome light. Its held in with little push washers.

Yeah, I've dealt with those crappy GM washers before on a couple other cars. I'm planning to eventually replace it, so I'm not to worried about the paint, but for the time being I just want it to stop showering my car with crap every time I drive. Rolling Eyes

if you do it carefully you won't need a tarp. i ran bare metal on my white car for the better part of a year before finding a headliner in a junkyard that was salvageable.

me too. actually i bought my car without a headliner. I made a new one because of how bad it looked. but then again mines a hard top, so there was a lot more bare metal.

Alright, thanks guys.

I am wondering about the center console though. I have the fancy one with all the odometers and crap. Can I bolt that up to the roof itself, or is it attacked to the headliner in some way?

I kinda want to do the overhead in my car. Oddly enough out of all the thirdgen's I've had, none had the overhead console.

It's pretty useless, actually. About the only thing I ever actually used it for was as a replacement for the little card taped in the glovebox reminding me when to change the oil. Rolling Eyes

I have a roof console and I love it!

I like what Tony did with his, with taking out the odometers and put in a few switches...put your Nitros Arm/Purge switches up there.

I use mine so I know exactly when I need to get gas since my fuel gauge has been rendered inoperative. Very Happy Saved me on a couple of occasions.

I like the idea of placing switched up there.

If I had anything cool to switch in the car, I would. I'm gonna wait till my t-top seals get shipped in, then make a project out of it.

at one time all of the following functions were controlled by those switches

2ndary fan ON
torque converter lock up
brake light cut (as in flip a switch no brake lights)
momentary brake lights on.

now the TQ lock one does nothing. Rolling Eyes

BTW Rod, i have a T-top roof console in OK shape. the sunglasses pocket is SHOT but you can get a new one (as in brand new so the elastic works) for like 13$. i also have a decent one that came out of the GTA when i put the new one in.
