so im gonna get gears next payday. and lately iv been researching. i def wanna go 3.73. but the "chevy guy" at my local baxters says since i have overdrive i can run 4.10 and still have economy. but i dont know i think that may be too much for a daily driver. what do you think.

700R4? If so, smack that Baxter's guy. With 3.73's and a near-stock TPI you'll be rolling about 12mpg with hard city driving.

I love my 4.10 gears, of course I don't have a slushbox tranny or tuned puss injection. Razz

Don't go over 3.73's.

See the thing about the 700R4 is that it's first gear is 3.06, which is deep as hell. When I was running it with my 3.73 9-bolt on the street my car would shift into second almost instantly off a hard launch (assuming I actually got traction). It wont be as extreme for you since you're not running a higher stall or a shift kit, but it will still make your first gear pretty useless.

This on top of the fact that your also pushing the TPI even farther out of it's sweet spot.

4.10:1 is too much for your car. Be sure to consider the final gear ratio of your car, including the transmission, rear axle, and tire size. All of them effect the torque put to the ground. Your 700R4 transmission has a very aggressive 1st gear ratio over 3:1. That means you can have less gear in the rear axle and have the same final gear ratio as an older muscle car with 4.10 gears and a 3-speed auto.

Also, your engine isn't exactly a revving monster and has strong low end and mid range torque. You want to take advantage of that and let the engine operate in that range. I think 3.73 is more than enough. Maybe even 3.5x gears would work better. I had 3.45 gears in my supercharged Vette with a 6-speed transmission.

Rod, is your T-5 one of the 2.95 WC's, or is it one of the old-school ones?

It's not a World Class, but it has the 2.95 first and the .63 overdrive.

I had 4.10 with my t56 and i didn't like it. My first gear was so short it wasn't even funny. I have 3.73 and i can actually use my torque. The highest i would go on t-5 is 3.73. personally i would go with some 3.55 or what ever. keep it in the power band a little longer. Smile

Changing the powerband works well too.

That's what I did, and the 4.10 T5 combo is great!! Very Happy

If he does go with a cam and StealthRam the gears will help him out. TPI pushes past it's band very fast with gears. When I was streeting the IROC I ran dead even on a brand new 350Z off the line, but (no lie) lost to a Ford Taurus from a 110mph roll. All bottom end.

BTW, Rod, you have one of the best looking torque "curves" I've ever seen. 300rwtq from 2K to 5K. Thumbs up

Damn dude, why waste time with gears? I thought you had like 2.73's or something. Lots of other things that will net you more performance than that.

No use going over 3.73 if youre motor isn't designed for it.

I'll join the crowd and agree. Especally with the auto. It might make up for the drastic 1-2 shift those transmissions have, but you'd be better off with 3.42's for the Auto. I have a 5 speed and 3.73's. I like how that combo works for me. Pulls real hard in the first 3 gears, and I'm at about 2500rpm in 5th gear at 70mph.

If I do a new motor, I'll opt for something I can wind to 6000-6500rpm, and then do the 4.10's.

Dewey and Quicktrip are right, look for a gear setup that will optimize where you make power at.
