I too have looked into this subject pretty deep, especially with the design on my Z34 Lumina. I opted to maintain my stock box but removed the noise supression cone. It gets a good direct shot of air coming in from the front of the car. K&N from previous owner and just for fun, I put a new Fram A/F in it, I noticed quite a difference in idle and off idle throttle response so I put the K&N back in it. Given that my A/F box if located very close to the cross over pipe is why an open cone filter is a poor choice as I've seen on some W-bodies. As I do miss my GTA, I really do enjoy my Z34. At 6k the thing has tremendous pull and will out corner my previous F-body but it just isn't quite the same. I miss that good ole muscle... Tony has seen my Z. Nice thing about that car... 28 mpg on my recent trip to Linciln city, OR. 234 HP @6200 rpm at the front wheels when I dyno-ed it a few months ago, wanted to see the difference with the chip I had made for it and with the updates to the suspension, it is a blast to drive. I call it my go-cart with a lazy boy...
Side note.... I really miss the posts from Danked.... was some good reading, just when I thought I had read it all..... along would come another eyebrow raiser. Almost worth letting him post for the laughs.
Didn't mean to jack the thread with a non-f-body thought but wanted to toss in my .02 |

| The key is getting the air filter, in a location with high pressure in front of it. pulling it from the nose of the car, is ideal, as you create a big high pressure zone there. Depending on where in the fender you place it, it may not get cold air. Under the hood, the air has little movement, so it creates high-pressure. With the air under the car moving along, creating low pressure, the hot air will move downward with the pressure diffrence. You want to make sure to locate the air pick-up where you are getting air that is cold, and in a high pressure zone. |

Another good thing to note....
A flat panel when facing the wind will develope 0.07psi on its surface when the wind speed reaches around 70mph. So don't get any funny idea's about RAM air. It won't hurt, but the benefits cannot be seen until well past 70. I did the math with some mechanical engineers a while ago. _________________ E30

That is about correct. now, you can get a little better effect than that, because with some trickery on the way you do an air pickup, you can create a pretty good pressure differancal. across the intake inlet.
The top of the hood is also a horrible play, because it has very high velocity air, which will devolope a lot of low pressure across the surface of the hood. It is a VERY bad place to put a air intake, but a great place to put a hole for extracting heat from the engine bay. |

That is entirly diffrent, that is out away fromt he car so much, that it is sort of its own thing.
But for example, the vent slots on the nose of the GTA, you would NOT want to get your air from there.
on edit:
hey Paul, think you could find me a bigger picture, I am having trouble seeing that one. |

Dewey is talking about a hood intake facing the sky. That tunnel ram is well above the air film next to the hood. It acts as a ram air intake but more importantly allows a place to suck in the gobs of air needed for the massive engine underhood.
By the way, I kind of miss Danked too. He was entertainment if nothing else and completely harmless as long as you don't suffer from high blood pressure. |

I try not to bring him up.
Yes he was entertaining. It got old getting PM's from him, cussing me out, and getting IM's at home, with him trying to bother me, because I locked a thread, and so on, and so on. Even after I banned him, I still get IM's from him, calling me names and so on. Entertaining from a pathetic stand point he may have been. But that sort of attitude is not was this group is about. The crew as a whole, is a really good bunch of people, who go out of their way for each other, I don't want that to be ruined by someone like Danked.

No problem. I think we all would have made the same decision. You do a good job administering the accounts, Dewey. |

really makes you wonder where they grow people like him.... if breathing were not a natural action...........
Someday another F-body will grace my garage.... hopefully a 'Maro this time. Gotta finish the Ranchero project first. Plus I have my Z34.... along with the rest of my "fleet".
I still really enjoy reading the threads and throwing in my .02 once in a while. |

We get about 10 posts that are topic related, and then someone hijacks it. _________________

The ranchero is a 1970, 351 Cleveland, 3 on the tree, soon to have a C6.
It's disassembled and I'm working on the body now. The auto swap was a kinda last minute change. It's complete mechanically except for trans...now just the body. And lots of time....
Sorry, I guess I kinda jacked the thread and got it off the subject now. |

| Well, so far it's coming along kinda slow. Lack of free time. I have the front fenders near 100% and the fender extensions are perfect, I gotta get the windshield out to repair a couple of small sp[ots then it's just a lot of sanding working my way back to the rear quarter panels that need serious work. I tried selling it, had some interest but everyone wants it for free. Pissed me off when i go and look at what a pair of good tail lights bring or the bed trim so I said F-U to everyone and I'm going to finish it. It was my wifes fathers car and he loved it and started on restoration before he passed so i gotta do it. Plus it runs so freakin sweet! |
