Well, since Iam having some problems with the distributor gear, I may be taking the timing cover off,
I was wondering if anyone knows for sure if,
1. A noisy gear drive will or will not interfere with the knock sensor?
2 A quite gear drive will work with the knock sensor? |

Who runs a knock sensor?
To answer your question I have no idea. Never seen it addressed before. |

I have been reading TGO,
Seems to be allot of debate over this subject.
We may go ahead and check the cam end play and put a quiet gear drive on.
If I have to pull the motor to give us a warm and fuzzy on the metal shavings from the distributor drive gear, Iam afraid we will be doing a 383 or something like that to it.
What a pain in the butt.
Did you get your engine back together? |

I wouldn't worry too much about the metal shavings. If you're running a good filter they should be gobbled up.
Change your oil after some miles of driving and you should be good to go.
Not yet. Still have to get the heads in to be worked on. Then it should all come back together nicely. |

I had a Pete Jackson dual idler 'quiet' gear drive in my '68 El Camino. Let me tell you that 'quiet' is a relative term. It was very loud and incredibly annoying. I ran it for about a month before I ripped it out. I will never do another gear drive again. And that was a premium quiet drive! |

| I have heard you don't want to run one unless you have a balanced engine. Any harmonics from the lower end can transfer to the camshaft and there might be a possibility of breakage. |

| Gear dirves sound cool.....when they are on someone elses car! Brad Haas car had one and he hated it! His car was not a tpi, but a carbed 350. I have read that a gear dirve will not work with a tpi because of the knock sensor. If ya want the sound of a gear dirve...get a blower:D |

| The main purpose of a gear drive is to tighten up the varation in timing patterns. That might be important for a high compression 600+ Hp drag car. But a double roller timing chain is plenty good for everybody else. |

I bought a gear drive and it specifically says do not install in a FI vechile that requires a knock sensor. and i heard from racers not to install them the vibes from the gear drive give off a harmonic vibration and wears out your cam bearings and valve train faster. _________________

I ran a gear drive for 300 miles (pete jackson noisy drive) on a balanced and blueprinted 355 and that costed me the motor. I had spent hours getting it all setup perfectly and then a couple of metal shavings came off the gear drive 30 miles later and wiped the main bearings and click clack no more oil pressure. so needless to say I don't run gear drives anymore! _________________

Holy crap Craig, is that you?!?! Haven't seen you around in a while! Hey, did you ever see Brad's car when he got the twin turbos on it? It was sweet but he gave up on it cause he never could get it to run right. _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6
