So the jeep started to make some funny noises. Sounded like an exhaust leak. Got worse, stuck my head under to feel around and it sounded like it was coming from the bellhousing.

Brought friend over for 2nd opinion. We concluded that it was a valve train issue, as it had gotten so bad now that the Check Engine light was on and it started running like crap.

$100 later the dealer has it almost done. Apparently, a not uncommon problem, is that something with the cam broke and there is a problem with a few of the valves. There are updated parts for this, mind you this is a 2004 vehicle LOL, that should resolve the issue indefintely.

AYE YI YI

So the moral of the story.... $800+ problem cost me $100 powertrain warrenty deductible!

Other good news:
-Header paint is ordered
-C4 HD Brackets are supposed to arrive tomorrow
-Taxes are supposed to be depostited tomorrow
-Springs for the camaro are on their way from IL.

Once the paint and springs gets here I'll have to find some time to go steal some of Brandon's precious time! hehe

Cool glad to hear things are on the upswing. A few questions:

Are you painting the headers or are you going to coat them?

What springs are you going with?

AWESOME!

Sucks about the jeep...good thing you have the warrenty.

just need to get a few more things done for the 3.73 posi rear, change bellhousings, and figure out why I keep fouling plugs....

after that she should be good to roll...then it'll be exhaust time.
I'm pretty confident she'll be all set by the time Cows rolls around.

Also did my taillight swap on the 4th gen today!

Ceramic Paint/coating

Same springs as before. The cam's recommended spring. Don't know that the springs are actually as much problem as the leaky valves are. We'll see I guess.... in 3 years.

Glad it was an affordable fix on the Heep Paul.

Good luck with the heads, springs, valves, and anything else that helps me kick your ass at the track this year. Laughing

So the Jeep will be ready Monday. I guess it's a real bear to lift a cast iron straight six cylinder head... to get to the lifters.... to replace the FLAT CAM!

Guess Chrysler knows about this. There was a batch of cams that didn't get the proper heat treatment and had a tendancy to go flat.

So I get a new cam/lifters! I guess that's good. Hehe the $150 for the warrenty and $100 for deductible pays for the like $2000 repair!

Jeeps still using flat tappet cams??? I had a 99 in with a flat cam in a new motor the other day too. I didnt know it was a flat tappet when I first put it in, or I would have used Delo400 in it to begin with. This time it got it.

Must be, never heard of a roller cam going flat? :: shrug ::

Tony, I'm convinced your Jeep really was a Heep. Everyone I know with Jeeps hasn't had a problem. And since this was a factory defect I don't see it being native of problems. 48k and this is all that's happened I'm happy.

I agree. In general, Jeeps with the straight 6 engine have a well earned reputation for running forever. It's not uncommon to see 200K - 300K+ mile examples still running around on the roads and trails. A Jeep can run poorly longer than most cars run at all.

And for some reason even if a Jeep dies... it doesn't go to the junk yard, someone snags it and goes wheelin!

Well, got the Jeep back and all seems to be well. Feels like it has a bit more pep to it but it's probably just the butt dyno being a liar.

Heh alreayd ripped the bumper off to build the swing out spare tire carrier. Almost done with it. Camaro parts on a Jeep!

Got the C4 brackets... FINALLY... can't say I'm happy with the product, or the time it took to get here. I wasn't expecting the holes to be oblong with die grinder marks because the machinist had his tolerances off :roll eyes:

Studs are press, rotors are turned. All I need to do is get the tap for the spindle and modify em! Will wait until I get the motor going first. Should something happen I'd rather not try out putting the top back together and new brakes lol.

to tell you the honest truth I never had that many issues with it. and those I did have could have been dignosed by anyone with any experiance, but I had no experiance. the one major ongoing problem was mostly casued by my ineptetude.

but I will start at the begining. My jeep was an idiot purchase. My mom and stepdad (they are now divorced, this guy was a huge moron... long stories, hours worth) bought it from the dude down the street. he (stepdad or prior owner) did not know a damn thing about cars. I knew verry little at the time, but I spent the first few days just cleaning out the junk. Pulled the valve cover and scrapped about an inch of burnt oil out of it. had dents from the rocker arms in it, THAT is how bad it was.

and you know.. it ran just fine for like a year and a half after that. it only started having real problems after I bought my bird and I let it sit for 7 months. the cooling system just rotted away... kinda sad .

the main issue I had was the rear drum brakes fell apart a few times and I had to replace the drums twice. My brother and I shared the thing at the time (my parents actualy owned it) and he would never report any of the odd noises it made, like the sound all the brake hardware flying apart and grinding around in the bottom of the drum.. you know, that kinda sound. and that never would have happened the second time had I replaced the adjuster screw. the first time happened because the adjuster screw locked up (I know now). I replaced the hardeware and greased the hell out of it and it lasted a few months, then I replaced it and it lasted untill I sold the car.

lemmie see if i can dig up the picture of the paintjob it had when we got it.... ok found it. now, I apologize for the quality of this, it was originally a digital picture that i had a print on paper of, then we lost the original and I just now took a digital picture of the paper... so it is not high quality.

so it looked like that and they actulay spent $2000 on it. the rear windows did not work (i fixed), the roof leaked (i fixed), the rear windshield wiper did not work (i fixed), the radio did not work (i fixed), and it ran a little rough (my dad helped me diagnose a few bad sensors). and upper drivers door hinge had broken off of the frame (my first welding project, it held)

by the time we sold it it looked like this:

I added the foglights (factory option, got off a junkyard car)
I added the tow package
I replaced the front and rear bumpers with the "bumperette" style (rear was crunched in originaly)

What was my point.... oh yeah.. I Gueass it was a Heep, but it without it my thirdgens would not be where they are. i learned alot from screwing with that thing. because of the sacrafices the jeep and my firebird have made my GTA will probably be fine. Shocked

Reminds me of those VW golfs from back in the late 90's that every single body panel was painted a different color from the factory.
