|
|
so, I decided to get rid of my Electric cooling fan a while back...I"m thinking that maybe wasn't such a hot idea.
I have the new fuel pump (mechanical) in and all ready to go, gave a couple sprays of starting fluid down the carb. It'll fire and run for a second or two and die. I'm not getting fuel up to the carb, and I"m not getting it to the pump.
Fuel gauge reads a little under 1/2 tank and I'm pretty sure there's gas in there.
I took a bunch of wires off the loom that the fan switch was on, I'm worried that one of them is a switch for fuel pressure. I couldn't find anything like that on the Wiring diagram I have for it, so I'm really not sure...any ideas? _________________

| Unless you have a late 86/87 with both the intank pump and mechanical there is no electrical connections for a mechanical pump. And even if you do have the intank pump the mechanical should be able to draw through it even if the intank isnt working. Take the gas cap off, take the suction hose off the fuel pump and blow back through to the tank. You should hear bubbling if theres fuel. This may also clean out the sock filter. If thats clear and you have fuel have somebody turn the car over while you feel for vacuum at the pump inlet. If there's no vacuum you may have something caught in one of the pump valves, a bad pump, or a flat cam lobe. Take the pump off and see if the pushrod operates like its supposed to. If all thats working replace the pump. |

Were you running with a mechanical before you put this one in? _________________

Yes it was a mechanical pump before. Seemed to work ok, just blew the check valve. Before I go through all that, I'll try the easy route and put 5gal's of gas in it and see if that works. I don't know how accurate the Gas gauge is in that car. _________________

| IIRC Brandon's evap line isn't plugged, mine isn't, and I know Mike's isn't. |

yeah, well tried the simple stuff first, 4.5 gal's of gas, plugged the Evap line....still won't fire, still not getting gas up to the pump. I don't think I misseated the pump, but I'll try taking it off and putting it back on to see if it changes anything tomorrow.
Its a NAPA pump....how often to these turn out to be duds? _________________

Unfortunatly pretty often. I finally gave up on them myself, and I work there. The boss disagrees with me though. I was going through at least 1 per year on each of my rigs. Even the lawnmower! So, last time I went and ordered the carter 120gph pump. It's basically the old school 60's hotrod style pump with the screw together halves and replaceable diaphram. It is'nt the polished version or anything so it wasnt too unreasonable.. something like $60. Bolted right in place but I had to change the lines because it uses 1/4" pipe fittings. |

hmm, I think I might have a faulty pump on my hands, we'll see though. the fuel pump on my fairlane was a NAPA replacement, and it worked just fine. who knows.
Maybe I should just pony up the $50ish bucks for the 80gph carter like the one that was on there. _________________
