Do I need to drop the axle to drop the fuel tank to get to the pump?
Thanks _________________

That is how I have always done it. I just did mine, I got it up high on jack stands, disconnected the rear brake line, and LCA's and shocks, from there I just set it straight down to the ground. I didn't mess with the torque arm. That gave me enough room to snake the filler neck out. The filler neck is the problem, to get it out, you need a fair ammount of room to manuver the tank.
hope that helps. |

be sure to drain the tank or else you will be really mad, it weighs a million pounds when full, i measured.

yes, however if you do not wish to rebleed the brakes just disconnect the hardline clamps along the unibody and the hardline/rubberline will flex down with the axle. this is how i do it. i also do not remove the tourqe arm.
few additional tips
1. while it is easy to cut the rubber lines up near the tank and replace them all with the tank out BE AWARE that one of the lines has a pressure fitting and is 35$ from GM. i would recomend replaceing the other three rubber hoses though. and slicing them is far easier then undoing those hose clamps in tight quarters
2. try your hardest not to bend the tank support straps, they are difficult to get back into the right shape
3. under no curcumstances re-install the tank without replacing the sending unit gasket. your car will smell like gas from then on.
4. replace the pulsator/rubber line. remember johns truble a while back.
1-3 are mistakes i made on my first job. i did not make them on my second job and everything worked out great.
good luck with your pump swap. i hope it all goes well. _________________ 86' firebird (Junked in 2015). 88' GTA (sold in 2020).

thanks! How much would a shop charge for this? How much would one of you who have done this already charge? _________________

Awww the resourcefullness of ALLDATA...... Book time calls for 3.8 hours (does not include draining or filling tank if full) so when you get your quotes from the shop at least you will know if their giving you the right deal on labor. _________________

I'm not sure anybody that's done it wants to do it again... even for money. |

| Heck man , if you were closer, and I didn't have plans this weekend, I'd help ya out, for nothing more than beer. After 4-5 fuel tanks, they don't seem all that bad anymore. |

if you want to do it next weekend i think i am free. well, one day next weekend, the other day i am helping chris witha tranny swap.
EDIT* good lord. buckly is all the way up at the puget sound well, it would have to be for more then beer.... it realy is not a difficult job to do yourself. you only need basic hand tools, a floorjack, jackstands, and the parts.
the only hard thing is that if you have never done it before it is a little time consuming. my first one which i did by myself, without any help from anyone took me almost two full 10 hour days. that includes draining a full tank, trips to go get parts, pizza, painting the filler neck, etc.. the second one i did took me like one 11 hour day, and that was also by myself. the first one was just about the 1st thing i did to the v6 car ever. i had never gotten much deeper then a tuneup before and was verry inexperianced at woring on cars. i think i could bust one out inside of 8 hours by myself if i realy put my mind to it. faster if i had help.
oh one more thing... your exhaust is not hard welded all the way to the headers is it? becasue if it is you may have to saw through it wrestling the tank out around hard welded exhaust is what made both of my jobs take so long. in the 2nd ones case i swzalled it off and had a shope weld it back up. what a cool drive for those few blocks with an open y pipe. my car sounded BAD ASS!!
anyway, i guess in closing..... as long as it is not your daily driver you are fine. take your time and there is verry little you can break. there is little to no complicated knowledge required to do this. any fool (read: me) with a chiltons manual should be able to do it. it is just going to take a while due to the amount of crap in your way. know-how wise it is "easy" |

I made a cool portable gas pump. i used a electric fuel pump and 2 5ft fuel lines one on each end and 15 ft of power wire for the pump. works great for draining fuel out of any parked cars. and its fast. _________________

I plan to install a carb and use a mechanical fuel pump. Right now I have no tranny, no exhaust, and soon no engine in the car. The car is up on jackstands right now, with the rear axle on the rear stands. The torque arm is up against the floorboard. When would be the best time to drop the tank, before or after I install the new engine and tranny? _________________ 82 base model Firebird. when I take the tank out, I take the rear-end and torque arm out from under the car as one peice, i just unbolt the LCA's, shocks and brake lines, then whole thing back, when you do that the torque arm just slips out of its mount. When the axle out of the way of the car, you then have enough room to get the tank out, so long as you get the exaust out of the way also.
Don,
The pulsator is a little diaphram thing that attaches inline with the line in your kit, when you get your pump out you will see it (assuming you have one). Not all of our cars have pulsators. |

| If you were closer I'd help out. I would recomend getting someone to help, at least with removing and reinstalling the tank, its a heavy and acward thing to move around. I did get mine out of the car by myself in about 2 hours. But having help getting it back in is nice, the fuel neck sometimes takes some work to get it back in nicely, its much easier with another set of hands. |

The question is, how much would one of those shop guys charge to come over to your place on the weekend to do the job for you on the side? |
