so im drivin my car to my cousins today for dinner and i noticed at off idel around 2-2500 rpm it was amaking aticking tnoise and got there and checked the oil and stuff it was good then on the way home about halfway back it started doing the noise all the time so i got home and you can hear it really loud its ticking at idle not liek a rod nock but loud ticking and if you reve it up slowly it seems to not get louder with the engine and it still runs and drives fine i put a screw triver on it and listened and you can definateley hear the sound when reving it seems to get a little quieter and thats listening throught the intake throught he valve cover i cant really hear it as wwell ....im thinking its a lifter my oil pressure is fine....im not sure im not as familiar wiht thoese engines as with small import motors _________________ Cadillac of Bellevue

Sound like you might have some valvetrain problems, You ought to take a peek under those valve covers aqnd see whats going on in there. Maybe a stud has pulled up or something...... Maybe just a loose rocker arm. Were you just driving normal when it happened or were you gettin on it when it started? _________________

Same thing happened to my 85 Z28 a few years back. When the ticking started I noticed a performance drop right away and pulled the valve covers immediately. Turned out to be a broken push rod! Damnest thing I ever saw! I've heard of bent push rods before, but this one was broken in two! I had to use a magnet to fish the lower half out of the lifter valley. _________________ '86 Trans Am - 5.0L TPI - LT1 cam - 700R4 - WS6

I hope its not that extreme.
noises like that can be mistaken for valvetrain noises when there something as simple as a blown exhaust gasket or exhaust leak.
Peek around and let us know!!
might not hurt to pull the valve covers and make sure the valvetrain events are occuring normally and without any problem! _________________

well it seems to perform normal and the noise is so damn intermitant like it would only do it at like 2500 rpm wiht no load on the motor then it went away after driving a bit and now it sounds different, really faint but only if you rev the motor _________________ Cadillac of Bellevue

Maybe a bearing inside the water pump? Did the noise go away after the flush?
hmm... Don't Gen II's run off the end of the cam? Does it make it less prone to bearing or impeller failure? Brandon, Paul...Bueller?
Is the temp reading normal? _________________

Headers, or stocker manifolds? If it's headers, then yeah, probably a leak. Manifolds can leak if the bolts back out though.

The manifolds can crack as well. I have seen this happen. _________________

YEA IT IS......thats why im so pissed about it and the shop that built the motor recently went out of business...im trying to decide my options i spent all my money on the car and now i want to fix it but could i get away with just either having the cranky turned or replacing it and putting in new bearings? or maybe just new bearings<<i doubt it but its worth asking _________________ Cadillac of Bellevue

If it hasnt gone on very long then you very well could get off that easy. You won't know for sure until you pull the pan and take a look. Worst case scenario should be a crank kit and 1 new rod. If its a new engine then it's entirely possible something has come loose. Hopefully it hasnt worn the crank or rod too much yet.

Just throw a set of gaskets on the manifolds. It's a cheap test to rule that option out.

Always nice when the motor builder goes out of business...
Still with a fresh motor I would try to eliminate all external "theories" first.
Like he said, do the manifold gaskets.
Also, I am no motor pro by far, but aren't internal problems always constant noises in the RPM range? As in, they don't have a magical RPM number they only make noise during? _________________
