Brought to you by, none other than VW.
| Quote: | | The Short Version: After what seems like an eternity of rumors and digitally created photos of a possible return of the Scirocco, Volkswagen finally shows us a concept version of the Scirocco called the IROC Concept, a play on the spelling of scIROCco. As you can see in the photos Volkswagen has chosen not to pursue a retro styled Scirocco endeavor and instead went with a clean sheet of paper and a brief to make sure the vehicle would be a useful 2+2. The photos hide the true dimensions of this vehicle - compared to the current GTI the IROC is a full 4 inches longer in the wheelbase, 1.6 inches wider in track, a full 3.3 inches lower in overall height and 1.6 inches longer overall. The concept is powered by a TSI engine (VW's supercharged and turbocharged powerplant) that is rated at 210hp with a DSG gearbox. Expect the production version of the Scirocco to be very similar to the concept when it appears in late 2008. Volkswagen of America is still looking carefully at this vehicle for the U.S. market, but no decisions have been made yet to offer it in the States. |
I can't say I have much of a lively commentary. I'm trying my hardest to find a funny or possitive spin. It is just not happening. _________________

They still control the name IROC. They granted the rights to Chevy, and subsequently Dodge to make cars with the IROC logo. GM decided against making an IROC Trans Am since they thought it would just confuse people.
Now unless those little buzzers are going to be the new IROC race model, they need to find a new name. |

| i am sure that if it goes to production with IROC on the back then the IROC people will draw up a contract and money will shake hands. in fact i am willing to bet they allready did in order to put it on the concept car. VW is not just going to stamp IROC on the side and cross their fingers no one notices |

I thought that whats IROC is using for there next racing series. but thats not true. BTW the word "trans am" is a racing organization just like IROC that GM rents (paying royalities per unit produced) the name from way back then. I can't remember where i read that but it will turn up again.
| Quote: | It wasn't more power that made the Trans Am special, but its looks and handling. Conceived to campaign in the SCCA's road racing series (with a special de-stroked 303-cubic-inch V8 never installed on the production car), Pontiac paid $5 to the racing organization for each Trans Am sold as a license fee for the name. With a special dual intake scooped hood, deck spoiler, fender vents and white with blue stripe paint scheme, the Trans Am was easily the flashiest Firebird yet. With its lowered suspension, big antisway bars, larger tires and Ram Air III (making 335 horsepower) or Ram Air IV 400 V8, it was also the best handling and most sophisticated. Going on sale in March of '69, only 697 Trans Ams were sold during this first model year (including eight convertibles). A slow start for what would become an automotive icon.
