so, for those who do not know, the wheel bearings on my GTA are SHOT! i did not want to spend $$ replacing them now since i will be doing a brake swap in like 3-4 weeks. but i realy want to drive it around in the next month. here is the question, if i buy new ones for the GTA, in 3-4 weeks, when i do the brake swap, could i put them in the 6 so it has new wheel bearings as well, or are they not re-usable like that? the wheel bearings in the 6 are only two years old, but i figure what the hell, you know.

Uhh.... what does this have to do with the brakes? Are your fronts so shot that you cant reassemble them for a month? |

the new brakes will require all new larger wheel bearings (the Ls1 type i think) to put the Ls1 hubs on a 3rd gen spindle.
the reason i am waiting to do the brakes is that i do not yet have all the parts required to do the swap, i have ordered some stuff from edmiller and have yet to recieve it.
the brakes i have now work fine. well, they suck, but no more then any stock 3rd gen brake setup . they are functioning correctly is what i mean. they are assembled and the car is driveable, but the wheel bearings are shot to the point that i feel extreamly uncomfortable driving the car farther then the video store down the street.
i want to replace the wheel bearings so i can drive the car around between now and the break swap. at first i had planned on just letting it sit until i did the swap. but i no longer wish to do that.
the reason i would be putting the New stock wheel bearings on the six (or atleast taking them off the GTA) is that the LS1 hubs will require LS1 wheel bearings.
i think i have cleared that up, sorry for the confusuion. |

I wouldn't recommend pulling the bearings out of the hub to use on the 6. You're option there would be to use the whole rotor.
I bet it could be done, but I know it's REALLY easy to fubar a bearing pulling it out. |

hmpf... i might just hafta eat the cost of new bearings on this one. oh well, i buy the realy cheap ass Vato-zone store brand or somthing.
it's been so long since i did the wheel bearings on the 6 i can't hardly remember having any trouble with anything (other then getting my hands clean, GLOVES this time)

Good idea to use gloves anyway, keeps grit out of the bearings themselves. |

You guys put in new bearings everytime you do brakes?
Damn, to this day I have never had to replace a wheel bearing on any of my cars. When I take it apart for brakes I clean the bearings in gas, inspect them, and re-pack them with grease. |

well i will hafto when i get new brakes as the old ones will no longer fit, since i will be using 98+ hubs for my 98+ brakes.

the hubs? thats the pard that spins on the spindle right? how can it bolt on?
i don't actualy know... Ebmiller said he would send me the ones i need in place of the ABS S10 ones i had (booby gave em to me) |

Our hubs spin on the spindle. I was under the impression that 4thgen hubs bolt to the spindle. They don't have that "spindle" spike thing or whatever you'd call it that we have. They just bolt directly on.
Did you send ebmiller your s10 ABS hubs? If not I'll definately take them! I think he's just sending you rotors that have been turned down to make hubs that don't have the reluctor ring for ABS.
If that's the case I don't see why you couldn't reuse the bearings as long as you just grab a new race, or make sure you don't mess up the race taking it out. Meaning you can buy a set of bearings for the GTA and reuse those when doing the brake swap. |

ohhhh.... cool. thanks ian.
and yeah, i sent him my S10 Abs hubs. and my C5 reloaction brackets, and he is going to send me "the hubs i need" and Ls1 caliper reloacation brackets. |

Weird. I thought they were the same (s10 vs thirdgen) just sans reluctor ring. Guess they must not be. |

All the s10 ones should be the same. Heck, new 2wd trucks have our brakes. My dad used my spare set to do his most resent brake job. |

I think he cuts an s10 hub down to size. I think they either use the same bearings you have now, or s10 bearings. Looks like Ian's given you the correct info. I wouldnt be afraid of reusing the bearings. I would make sure the bearing is used on the same side of the car, so that it turns the same direction. It "shouldnt" make a difference, but they say that about alot of things.
I'm with Rod though, 270k miles and I've never changed bearings. Just clean and pack them once in awhile. |

You need to cut down either S10 or thirdgen hubs. The 4thgen hubs are not the same, you cannot use them. |
