Backround: i have been experiencing an odd tranny noise and i am scared... ok begin scene:

if i blow it up i will park the GTA for a bit while i scrounge together the parts for a T56 swap. but i would realy rather not do that for another few years. what i realy need is somone who knows more about cars (trannsmissions specifically) to drive it and till me what they think the noise is.

it sounds like my throwout bearing is going out, which is funny cause i have an automatic.

Does it only do it when the car is in gear or when its In P or N?

so far i have heard it a few times. all have been in gear while cruising. i noticed it today while the car was bouncing over some bumps (us-26) and it seemed to be in time with them, which had me thinking "U-joint"... but then i heard it a little bit more while on flat ground at cruise. seems not to matter if i am accelerating lightly or decelerating. i have never heard it under load (yet) o while breaking (yet). it seems to coming from the front of the tranny tunnel, like around tourque converter area. god i hope it has nothing to do with the engine No no no...

the noise kinda sounds like water hitting the floor of the car mixed with a reverberation only lower. but not exhaust low. the sound is also ucompanied by a slight vibration i can feel if my hand is on the floor. it comes in little 1-2 second bursts. i had about 10 of these 1-2 second bursts spaced about a second apart, then nothing for about ten seconds, then a few more. then nothing for the rest of the trip.

this happened when i was eastbound on US26 going over the sylvan hill. the only consistantcy with when i heard it was a sliiiight incline. but i heard it at one point while coasting... i just don't know. how do you check u-joints. i hope it's one of them. can you service the ujoints on an aluminum driveline?

Doesn't really sound like anything at this point. I personally have never had a u-joint make a noise. Had some bad ones too on my old '67 pickup (had 3 u-joints)

Two ways I know of to check U-Joints... jack the rear up, in park. Turn the driveshaft and try to see the slop between the yolks and the driveline.

Second, take the driveline out and turn the yolk around the shaft at like a 45º angle. Slowely and feel for stiffness. I had one feel stiff that the shop said was going, didn't cause a vibration or noise.

If they are greasable, put hte driveline back in and grease them.

Sounds like it could be an axle bearing, or something in the suspension. These cars make all kinds of suspension noise.

Does anything happen with the engine/driving as this noise/vibration happens? Or is it just that?

Tranny fluid color? Keep an eye on it if you are concerned.

just the noise/vibration, no othor symptoms. tranny fluid was looking good last time i checked.... i'll check again.

Rolling Eyes Must be something going around. I've been having the exact oppsoite of your problem, Tony. At idle, with my foot on the brake in D there's a tinny rattle from under the car. Shift up into N and it goes away.

Gonna have to check the mount, driveshaft, and exhaust while I'm working on the brakes tomorrow.

Check the tranny bolts on the back of the engine and make sure they are tight. Twice they backed out on me and hence.....funny noise.

thnks bob and mike. i'll check the tranny mount and bolts next time i have the car in the air.

more info on "the noise" in case it turns out not to be the mount or bellhousing bolts...

it seems to occur only in OverDrive while in LOW RPMs. like when it first shifts in to 4th and i am still only doing 43MPH. when there is almost NO load on the tranny.

I had read where you installed a lock-up cut off switch. Are you aware that driving in OD without the converter in lock up causes the trans to make excessively high heat? I did the same thing in my 2.8 S10 and it was nice to have when pulling a small hill on I-5, but I had to remember to re-enguage it. it was a 700R4 as well. Just be careful of that, heat = death to an auto. Also, about 6 months after I had got the car, i had replaced the trans mount, but that doesn't mean it's not shot again. What it did to me was when I'd take off from a stop with moderate pedal, the trans was jumping up and smaking the tunnel. Was a loud thunk, unlike what you are describing. I was surprised at how little the trans bolts had backed out causing what I thought was a failing trans noise..... I hope you can nail it down.

the switch i installed LOCKS the tourque converter. and it is a track only thing. i have used it for about one minute on the street for testing purposes. it is hard on tranny+converter, but it can give me minor gains in the 1/4.

Sounds like exhaust or something vibrating and touching something else. I had that with my auto. Engine moved more in gear than in neutral, so it took up my exhaust clearances sometimes.

Thought about that. I have had trouble with one exhaust bracket in back dropping bolts, and when it falls down, it rides on the back suspension and is noisier than hell. I'll have to see if it came down again.
