I'm dreaming again.
Anyone know what the max lift a Stock LG4 305 head can handle with the stock retainers and springs?
I'm staring at all these different camshafts in the Jegs catalog that came with today's mail. Trying to plan out a budget and what I want to do in terms of power adders but still have a good driver. I keep coming back to the single pattern Crane Energizer 272H. Will the .454" lift be too much for stock spring pressure and rocker arms?
John, what are you running in your L03? _________________

.454 should be the limit if not a bit too big.
Springs are native to the cam, not the head.
Get some z28 springs, and run something like a comp XE 262 or 256 |

Noted.
I think I"ll go "one notch down" and aim for the Crane energizer and shoot for the 266 AD and .440" lift. Better to play it safe. I don't need giant lift or high revving power. Kind of aiming for the best of both worlds. Good daily streetability, and ample powere when called upon.
Any brand reccomendations? should I consider other's outside Crane (say, lunati, or comp?) I've heard nothing but good things from others using Crane Cams.
I"ll probably do headers and Exhaust and Intake manifold before I do cam though. I'll be a part of the crowd and annie up for Hooker 2055's, they seem to have good reviews in terms of durability, looks, fittment. And I hate running into trouble. Aiming for 2 1/2 maybe 3" past the collectors. Not sure if I want Y-pipe or true duals yet. _________________

Crane cams are well made, nice, quiet, long lasting cams. But, their lobe profiles are all older and less extreme then the other brands.
Comp XE line makes great torque, and has modern fast acting lobes. But, they can be really noisey because they close the valve so fast.
Lunati Voodoo's are the newest design in cams at the moment. Think of a comp XE but with a slight ramp change on the closing side to catch the valve and close it quietly.
Comp XE and Voodoo's will make the most hp and tq. The crane will probably have the least problems and are the quietest. |

Well if it's going in a thirdgen then you're forced to get the noisiest and least reliable cam. _________________

So basically it'll sound kind of like my stock cam Ian?
I'm gonna stick with Crane per Brandon's information.
Its just a 305.
My real "powerhouse" V8 I think will probably end up being a Gen II 383. Most likely just a Long block crate motor. _________________

Chris,
you may want to think about just using my Camaro to beef up yours.
It has a ZZ4 intake manifold on it, a rebuilt CCC Q-jet (runs nice actually, didnt have any spare parts )
and SLP 1 5/8" headers (you'll have to kill Tony if you want the y-pipe for it .... or have some custom made... dual exhaust maybe?)
I also have a nice, new (less than 150 miles on) set of MSD spiralcore 8.5mm wires, with MSD "high temp race boots", and the boots and wires all have heat shielding.
I also still have the wiring harness to put your computer controlled "shizzle" back in for the most part, so it atleast runs... better than it is now apparently.
I'll show you what all is good for the taking tommorow man. |

WOW. there's a lot more than I thought was on it.
I'm glad now the motor blew in my 84.....Out with the old, in with the new and IMPROVED. I might keep that 350? Shortblock you have. Got a friend who may be intrested in taking my 84 and that thing and making a race car out of it.
I don't know if you have the room or whatever... But I have a set of 882's that I'd gladly give you as some sort of "payment" on top of what I'm giving you for the Berli. I figure you probably just want money or something, which is why Tony and I are getting all this stuff to begin with. _________________
