There is a 9/16" bolt, that holds the down the distributor tie down, losen that, turn, and then tighten that back up. It is on the front/passange side.

Also, remeber, you need to disconnect the ESC plug, which is located on the passanger side of the engine compartment, near the strut mount.

The tie down bolt is on the passenger side, and its located on the intake itself. The two screws you took off before were the distributor cap.

The ESC connector john mentioned is a tan/black wire. Single wire, one quick disconnector. Mine is closer to the firewall, right where the heater blower motor is.

Unplug the ESC. Put timing light on #1. Run engine (Ideal to do this warm or it may have trouble staying running). Turn the distributor to adjust the timing to 6ºBTDC (That's 6 degrees advance)

To advance the distributor, turn it counterclockwise. To retard the timing, turn it clockwise.

When you get the base timing set as outlined above, turn off the car, re-connect the ESC plug and then restart the car. Now the computer will be controlling the timing. (remember to re-tighten the distributor tie-down bolt as well)

DO NOT just plug the ESC connector back in and drive away without restarting the car. The computer will not be in control and your timing will be severely retarded.

And you'll pull a mike as your car will be down with the snickess. Blowing it's nose with dripping spark plug wires because the headers got so hot.

I can give you a hand with the timing if you like tony. I screwed with my distributor a few times so I know the drill with the ESC connector, my schedule is wide open, LMK.

No....gonna make one final attempt to get it running out of my garage.....gonna have to figure out my starting problem (why everything goes dead when I crank it over...see "Dead Battery part 2")I'm gonna tweak with the timing again, and see if I can get it to run for longer than a few seconds...also if I get it to start, we'll have to see if there are any other problems (I.e. throwing other codes) I'll worry about the hinge and the last two rivits on the window later, after the car runs, then It will at least make to silverton under its own power.. then I can do those while its there. If I can't make it run, I'm gonna just tow it to a shop here in portland have them make it start and run. It must be drivable by the end of this month....as the 2001 will be cleared out at the beginning of May...(can't afford to keep making payments on it)

Any crewbies that want to volunteer there knoldege/time/wrenching.....I might try to turn this into an epic like Al's engine swap-a-palloza. I'd rather have you guys working on it than some mechanic I don't know. May do like a weekender of "make my car run" with beer and pizza as incentive...and a place for at least one or two people to crash if they need to.

sounds like a plan to me. count me in. i don't know how much expertese (sp?) i can bring to the table, but i am a damn good tool-bitch Very Happy .

well, my base timing was set to 8* retarded Confused . my father and i reset it to 6* advance and the engine seems to run smoother. seemed to have more pull too, but that was probably in my mind. that 9/16 bolt was hard to get to. we tried a wrench, step wrench, socket driver w/extension and universal joint, and finaly a socket with a wobble and that worked.

also found out my EGR had a vaccume line disconnected, fixed that. all in all it has been a productive day. and it's only 11:23 in the AM.

I'm in if I have the free time. And like Tony, my mechanical knowledge doesn't span that far (I know enough not to get snowballed by a mechanic). I'll run tools and turn wrenches, hold this or that in place. Besides, the car needs a good road trip now.

If I have the free time, I am in Kissimmee, Florida April 10-14 with travel before and after. All expenses paid Very Happy

i could borrow my dads timing light. that thing is crazy. he added about 10' of wire to the battery leads so it could reach all the way back to his battery in his race car. i guess this was easier then going off a ground point and the starter hot wire.

so after a lengthly test drive (studied with classmates @ 205/burnside area) i have determined it still has that "shudder". i will replace the plugs tuesday. i would do it tomorow, but i am taking my CCNA-INTRO exam, then i am going drinking with some classmates, in sorrow of defeat, or in celebration of victory. Cheers
