i have removed both axles. it was easy. (once i re-read the instructions you guys gave me)

but i do not know how to get the posi unit out. do i need to unbolt that realy big gear (ring gear right?) from the carrier 1st? or is there a way to take the whole thing out at once?

Just the two bearing caps. The carrier bearings are preloaded with shims so you may need to use a bar and pry on it some. Ring gear stays on.

Make sure you mark the caps at to which side they go on, and keep the shim packs together and which side they go on if you are putting it back together again with the same ring/pinion.

hehe yeah.... and make sure you don't mark them like someone else did once upon a time.

When Dewey, Brandon and I did my rear... Brandon marked the caps with a single and then a double center punch mark.... low and behold the same marks were already there... but reversed and on the other side so we didn't know which side was which afterall! LOL

i am yanking this to sell to somone on the board or on ebay. i assume the buyer would not want to keep the stock 2.73 ratio.

when you say "bearing caps" you mean the two things that retain the bearings on the inside edges of the differential housing? with two bolts apiece? if so i have allready pulled the two bearing retainers, so i just pry it out and it will come out? dso i not need to worry about the carrier breaking? i was a little scared to just pry it out.

and about these shim packs... they will be behind the two bearing races on the outside edges?

if the retainers are the two things i was talking about before it appears as though ether one would go on ether side. and if not it is too late as i threw everything i have pulled out of it so far in a plastic baggie. Sad

Well yes...........they will go on either side. But you are essentially screwed now since you didn't mark them. When the rear was made they are bolted on and machined in place for size and roundness. You swap them side to side you could have problems with the bearings since the bearing bores are not round anymore.

To get the carrier out you just pry it out "gently". It's a slight interfearence fit due to the preload on the side bearings.

The shims adjust the pattern and backlash of the gear set along with the pinion depth. If you are going with new gears using your old shim packs is a good starting point for setting up the new gears.

When we put the caps on backwards on mine, the bolts stripped. Had to get new bolts. Luckily we didn't strip the housing!

i am selling it to a third party. said third partie would be putting it in there open diferentialed rear end. wouldent said third party want to re-use there own shim packs and retainers?

also is this "don't mix em up" thing true of 9 bolts too? 9 bolts are bearing retained. ....i did not know to pay attention when we did the 9 bolt. Shocked

Yes the buyer would be re-using their own caps, but of you want to use your housing again you have to mark the caps. Honestly, depending on what your plans are for this housing, since you can get another 10 bolt drum housing at U-Pull-It for around $50, I'd just scrap the housing you have now and get another housing. It's not really worth taking a chance on building that housing up on a 50% chance you have the caps on the correct side.

It's true of a 9 bolt, 10 bolt, 12 bolt, 14 bolt....F*ord, GM, Chrysler, you name it. Virtually anything with caps like that. Especially an engine block. You mix up the caps on a block, and you have dropped around $200 to get the block aligned honed.

When in doubt, mark them.

hmm... prety sure we set them so we knew ehich side they went on.... Shocked i hope so anyway!

i am planing on scrapping the rear end housing. it had a bent axle and that is getting scrapped too. i have a 9 bolt on the GTA now that i am quite happy with.
