|
|
Hey guys,
So my problem is that my 83 fails DEQ both times I've taken it in. The hydrocarbons or whatever are reading into the 3000's, when it says it can only be 220. Took it to a shop, said it was going to be $2000 to replace the catalytic converter, we were like nope, lowered the idle, and somehow it did way worse, reading in the 4000's. Anyone have any idea on how to fix this? _________________

check your timing
make sure it has no faulty ignition parts
bad cat

If you want to fix it a new Magnaflow cat is like $80, but you might want to figure out if something else took the cat out.
If you just want to pass you want a high idle, very retarded ignition timing, a very hot engine, and as much isopropyl as the thing will take without stalling. |

$2,000.00 to replace a catalytic converter is insane. I hope that was a typo. I had this job done once and it was 200.
I have a catalytic converter from my 86 firebird that has about 50,000 miles on it. I would be willing to let it go cheap. Should be less than $100 to have it installed by an exhaust shop. Especially if we cut your old one off first.
You will need to figure out why the old one failed, or else the new one will too. |

They wanted to replace a bunch of other things as well, but I figured 2000 just to pass emissions was way too much. They said something about the carb leaking fuel, although I hadn't seen that happen. It feels and sounds like it's running fine, though. _________________

Please tell me you are not still running the Rochester sequential 2-barrel on there.
If so I think I may have figured out your problem. |

I have the original carb in there, by the sound of it, those tend to fail? What should I get to replace it? _________________

As ideal as that would be,I haven't the slightest clue as to how to convert, and it would probably be outside of my budget haha. I would be interested in picking up your cat, though, just to see if that makes a difference. _________________

I can cut it off this evening after work. if you want to swing by I have a garage full of parts right now, you might see something else you want/need. I have the most comfortable seats you will ever sit in, you have to give them a test sit. |

If it fails, isopropyl alchohol would do the trip as mentioned before, always passed the sniffer in az with that, never had a core in my catalytic converter but the alchohol made up the difference _________________ If you expect a kick to the balls and get a slap to the face its still a victory

UPDATE AGAIN: shop said like 2 cylinders weren't firing at all, which I guess explains the high hydrocarbons. Not sure the cause of that problem yet, shop still working on it. Once that gets fixed, I'd be down to check out those seats again and that one bar if that's still available. _________________

OK, shop fixed ignition timing and all that jazz, but still has slightly too high hydrocarbons. The hydrocarbons go up when doing the throttle test for some reason. Also it has high CO2. I was gonna call the shop back up and say it didn't pass, but I am at a loss as to what is causing it to fail still. I took it twice today.
I might just give the alcohol thing a shot and see how that works. _________________

If I remember correctly, oregon makes you pass a higher standard today then the car was originally designed for. Basically they want them off the road. Didn't Dewey try like 40x before passing? I'd load the thing with alcohol and give it a go. |

Use race grade methanol. About a 1:5 ratio. Or Drill a 5/16 hole 4-5" infront of your cat from the driver side. _________________ A redline a day keeps the carbon away! |
